How my skill saved me from poverty
As eager children, it's hard to appreciate that our elders often genuinely know what skills will serve us best in life - even if that means diverging from our own dreams. At the time, parental and grandparent wisdom can seem outdated, overcautious or intrusive. But looking back, I'm profoundly grateful I listened to my grandmother's firm guidance to learn a trade skill as a teenager which steered me away from riskier goals.
As a sports-obsessed youth, my singular ambition was to become a professional football (soccer) player and represent Nigeria on the world stage one day. I dedicated mornings, evenings and weekends solely to improving my footwork, speed and shot power, certain fame and fortune would follow. Schoolwork took a backseat to the fantasies played out in my head scoring dramatic match-winning goals.
My grandma , however, had other ideas for my career path. She insisted I spend some of my abundant free time learning practical technology repair skills that would guarantee stable income. I stubbornly resisted at first, certain my football talents would be squandered. But her patience and persistence wore me down.
Grudgingly, I began accompanying to learn phone repair skills after school instead of soccer practice a few days a week. Though electronics confused me at first, I gradually picked up skills diagnosing issues, delicate disassembly techniques, ordering replacement parts, and reassembling devices. My growing competence and speed felt rewarding in ways new.
By my final year of secondary school, I had mastered complex phone and tablet repairs that earned me a legitimate income from Grandma's shop part-time. My passion for football never faded. But having technical skills to fall back on in case sports stardom panned out gave me security.
Of course, despite my dreams, my football career plateaued due to injuries. But thankfully, my fluency with electronics and engineering allowed me to transition to running the family phone repair business full-time. Building upon the early skills Grandma insisted I learn opened doors to steady success. Today our shop supports my family and saves our community money fixing devices versus buying new.
Now when I see eager young kids consumed by unrealistic ambitions as I once was, I gently nudge them to build a technical trade as well. Though less glamorous than pop star or sports dreams, foundational skills empower future stability and options. I'm forever grateful Grandma instilled practical wisdom and perseverance in me at a young age over fleeting passions. Her guidance to broaden my horizons beyond just football truly bettered my path. With patience and care, we must foster children's greatness - even when that greatness takes shape humbly through mending gadgets rather than chasing glory.
At first, the intricate circuitry and tiny components inside phones and tablets totally bewildered me. I'd fumble with tools, struggling to disassemble devices properly or identify issues. The work required meticulous dexterity I simply hadn't built up. Grandma's patient explanations still couldn't penetrate my technophobe brain. I wanted to throw up my hands and walk away permanently those first frustrating weeks.
But gradually, repetition started building competence. I carefully studied repair guides, memorizing component names and functions. My hands adapted to delicately removing screens and soldering new ports. Diagnosing common software glitches became second nature after seeing the same issues surface again and again. Pride swelled whenever I successfully revived a device on my own that had stumped me just weeks prior.
The real confidence boost came when I progressed to solving more obscure and perplexing malfunctions that required real deduction. Like the time a child's tablet wouldn't charge properly no matter what I tried - until I discovered a stray piece of gum jamming the power port. Grandma was overjoyed when I relayed the intricate solution I devised.
In those moments when devices came back to life in people's hands thanks to my efforts, I felt enriched in ways kicking any soccer ball couldn't match. The joy and relief shining from their eyes as cherished photos or contacts were restored resonated deeper than any sports trophy ever could. With growing proficiency came a sense of purpose. Though it took months of struggle, electronics repair became a craft I could proudly own.
