In Indonesia, a Driving License (SIM) is proof of registration and identification provided by the National Police to someone who has fulfilled administrative requirements, is physically and mentally healthy, understands traffic rules and is skilled in driving a motorized vehicle. Every person driving a Motorized Vehicle on the Road must have a Driving License in accordance with the type of Motorized Vehicle being piloted (Article 77 paragraph (1) of Law No.22 of 2009).

The latest legislation is Law Number 22 of 2009 which supersedes Law Number 14 of 1992. Law No. 14 of 1992 has been revoked and declared invalid, but Government Regulation Number 44 of 1993 which explains Law No. 14 of 1992 declared to remain in force as long as it does not conflict or has not been replaced with a new one based on Law No. 22 of 2009.

Initially, the type of SIM only had SIM A, B and C, before the new rules were applied with SIM D with D2 class for four wheeled disabled people, then the SIM C group was divided into three according to the engine capacity used, C, C1 and C2.

Type

There are two (2) types of driving licenses in Indonesia (Article 77 paragraph (2) of Law No. 22 of 2009):

Individual motorized driving license

General Motor Vehicle Driving License

Individual SIM group

SIM class based on Article 80 of Law No. 22 of 2009

SIM A, to drive passenger cars and individual goods with a total weight that is not exceeding 3,500 kg.

SIM B1, to drive passenger cars and personal items with a allowed weight of more than 3,500 kg

SIM B2, to drive heavy equipment vehicles, towing vehicles, or motorized vehicles by pulling the attachment train or individual trailer with a weight that is allowed for the attachment train or trailer more than 1,000 kg.

SIM C, to drive a Motorcycle.

SIM D, to drive special vehicles for people with disabilities.

General SIM group

Class of General SIM based on Article 82 of Law No. 22 of 2009:

General A SIM, to drive public motor vehicles and goods with a total weight allowed not to exceed 3,500 kg.

General B1 SIM, to drive passenger cars and general goods with a allowed weight of more than 3,500 kg.

General B2 SIM, to drive a towing vehicle or motorized vehicle by pulling the attachment train or trailer with a weight that is allowed for attachment trains or trailer more than 1,000 kg.

Requirements for individual SIM applications

Additional requirements based on Article 81 paragraph (6) of Law No. 22 of 2009 for every Motor Vehicle Driver who will submit an application:

A Driving License B1 must have a SIM A of at least 12 (twelve) months; and

Driving License B2 must have a B1 SIM at least 12 (twelve) months

Application for a General SIM must have an SIM of at least 12 months

General B1 SIM application must have a B1 SIM or General A SIM at least 12 months

Application for General B2 SIM must have a B2 SIM or a General B1 SIM at least 12 months
