Redeemer were a pleasant deviation on the Australian metal horizon being one of the few who were willing to explore things outside the rigid thrash metal template to which most of their compatriots (Mortal Sin, Hobbs’ Angel of Death, Addictive, Rampage, Bezerker, etc.) were subjected. Like another Aussie formation, Nothing Sacred, the guys were straddling the nomansland between power and thrash in a way also quite reminiscent of their American colleagues Helstar, Liege Lord, Outbreak, and Attacker, and on the album reviewed here they have managed to produce a fair tribute to the North American scene, with all the epic reverberations that were compatible with the style.

A major difference in this case is the presence of a female vocalist, the name Cindy Grimwood, although her intense, at times plan manly, antics would hardly make one notice that. An imposing operatic intro (the title-track) lays out the dramatic template which acquires both heavy and loud proportions on “Heavy & Loud”, a pounding power metal anthem the squashing riffage ably supported by the very good emotional clean vocals of Grimwood; smattering gallops make things even more interesting later, the more aggressive showdown carrying on on “Sinner”, an angrier, rowdier proposition with an overt thrashy flair the diva helped by her colleagues on the vociferous chorus. “Transmuter” us an earth-shattering mid-pacer with great intense guitars which jumpy verve will keep the listener hooked, also with the help of a couple of more surprisingly brutal dashes. “Magician” is an officiant epic power metaller with really fine dramatic vocal performance and volcanic galvanizing riffs strangely reminding of Scorpions’ ultimately sombre “Animal Magnetism”.

“Metallic Frenzy” is a masterpiece of though-out progressive metal offering a wide gamut of riff-patterns again nothing overtly speedy, but enchanting nonetheless with the not very predictable developments and with the excellent lead-driven balladic interlude. “Apocalypse Riders” saddles all the horses and the furious gallops reign supreme the band revelling in their wayward impetuousness, with Grimwood shining again with a more high-strung timbre, retaining her pathos-like tirades for the final “Burn in Hell” which brings back the more serious layout although the staple galloping strides are here as well, the combination between the two sides abandoned in the second half for the sake of several noteworthy headbanging escapades with an intriguing semi-technical flavour.

Like quite a few other acts from Down Under (Bezerker, Fatal Array, Rampage, etc.) the band’s career never evolved beyond the one-album-wonder category, but even as such it should by all means be cited as an important part of Australian metal history, a heroic rousing strike greatly augmented by a solid female presence.
