Making new friends, no matter at home or abroad, I find difficult, but it is always interesting to hear how life is if you live in a country (which all differs from where you are and who you meet).

If you ask me many people worldwide are abused by employers. In the US it is not different, but also the costs of living differ.

My youngest worked 3 months in a very exclusive hotel in Germany and her salary was a bit over 500 euros! It was 6 days a week, and they broke many laws if it comes to the law, age, and so on. The other daughter works in a hotel in the Netherlands at night. Nightshifts are not allowed for more than 3 nights in a row, she does. Also not the greatest income.

If you go to East Europe it is even worse, especially in countries like Bulgaria and Hungary. In the last country, the average income is not even 800 euros, it's less but food, gasoline and so on is as expensive (if not more expensive) than in the Netherlands or Italy.
