It is noon and time for breakfast.
Although the kids have a free day of we woke up early and started the day with tea. Since weeks we only drink two kinds: early grey or peppermint.
The sun shone so a good start of the day after it rained again and the thunderstorm of last night.
There was more lawn to mow and the wolves wanted to jump around. For the next 4 hours, I was busy.
Nearly finished I switched the fryer on to fry frikandel. The children like it and so am I. Frikandel is typically Dutch and made of what usually no one would eat 'garbage', but it is what we call meat and still cheap. Cheap means 20 for € 2,25 (if you go to a Dutch 'snack bar' you pay the same price for one).
Is frikandel food for the poor?
No, I don't think so. It is one of the most frequently eaten snacks in the Netherlands together with a 'kroket' and 'kaassouflé'.
The frikandel was invented by a Dutch butcher's assistant in Dordrecht.
He wasn't longer allowed to sell his meatballs to the catering industry/cafes and restaurants because the law changed. He changed his ball into a sausage. His recipe remained the same.
The quality of the frikandellen you buy is for sure not the same.
You find rests of chicken in it, horsemeat, pork, spices, pepper, breadcrumbs, flour, etc. These sausages are mainly made by factories, you buy them frozen.
You can not trace what is in it. What you mainly taste are the spices!
There are also chicken meat frikandellen (personally I do not like the taste) and vegan available.
If you slice them open it's hard to tell what it is made of.
No doubt you are not eating steak for this price!
A frikandel special (special) is a frikandel sliced half open with mayonnaise, tomato ketchup or curry sauce and chopped onions. No onions on this picture.
**Something great about the frikandel is there is no need to fry it. You can also prepare it in a dry fryer, microwave, etc.
