Good morning Hive community, today I want to present you my small project of self-sustainable agriculture. My project arises from the idea of giving use to the land of the backyard of the house and thus take advantage of the cultivable spaces at home to produce food.
The idea started to turn around in my head, until I decided to get down to work. I evaluated the area in the backyard of the house, the area that could be cultivated and I cleaned the land well. I then decided to plant banana burro, a variety that is more resistant to pests and drought. The most important thing about this variety of plantain is that it can be harvested after 9 months.
The first seedling I planted was given to me by my neighbor Pablo, how happy I was when the plant began to sprout from the ground a few days later. The study of plantain planting began to deepen in my free time. I learned that there are several techniques for cultivation; the most used is the three-roller technique, used when the space to cultivate is larger.
As the days went by I planted other seedlings of other varieties, but this time, applying what I learned in my studies, I made a deeper hole, put some dry leaves in it and then placed the seed or seedling. This time, I planted the variety of plantain known in my province as plantain macho in addition to planting the plantain fruit or guineo.
The plantations were growing, and with them their leaves, which I took advantage of to make natural fertilizer with them, since, once they turn yellow, I cut them from the plant, making a transversal cut without damaging the main stem and then I chop them into small pieces that are watered in the soil. In this way I managed to make a layer of dry leaves on the soil, thus increasing the humidity in the roots. Whenever it rained, the soil was kept wet for several days, and this helped to eliminate soil erosion during the dry period.
When I got the first fruits, I realized that once the plant develops the bunch (name given to the total number of bananas that are born from the plant), it is necessary to place a fork to support the plant so that it does not break due to the pressure exerted by the banana hands, since they remain suspended in the air. After the fruits came out, I began to wonder when to cut them and know that they were fit for consumption, if I wanted to cut them green and not ripe? I understood that the cutting of the hands had to be done, starting with the top ones that are the first to develop and once the fruit increased in size compared to the fruits of the hands at the bottom, then I could say that they were ready to cut.
Obtaining these bunches does not supply my home with complete food, but it does help considerably, because it is a monetary saving, because they are products that I do not have to buy in the market; besides they are 100% organic products that are harvested in my backyard without chemicals of any kind.
As time went by, the plantations were bearing fruit, and two years after starting this beautiful experience, I can tell you that I have harvested 7 bunches, 12 bunches of donkey plantain, and 3 bunches of banana fruit or guineo.
It is an immense pleasure for me to be able to contribute to feeding my family, because with these crops I can help my parents and grandparents as well, and bringing a meal harvested by your own hands to the table is unparalleled.
