How to save on shipping costs on Amazon:

The following information refers to Europe and in particular to the Austria/Germany region, but the shipping conditions are similar in the U.S. and other Amazon countries.

During the lockdown and pre-xmas time, when people are ordering a lot from Amazon, I thought it's a good time to talk about the shipping costs at Amazon and how you can save money.

Basically, Amazon distinguishes between Prime members and non-Prime members.

Prime is a subscription service from Amazon, which costs €7.99 per month (or 69 😂 Euros / year for a yearly one-time payment). In return, you then receive free shipping on all orders that are shipped by Amazon and qualify for Prime, regardless of the order value.

Another advantage of Prime is that you also get access to the video streaming offer Prime Video. So overall, a pretty good deal in my opinion.

If you are not a Prime member, Amazon tries to persuade you to become a Prime customer with every order. As a non-Prime member, you have to be especially careful not to order Prime by mistake during the checkout process. This has already happened to many.

This is how you save on shipping costs:

#1 Be sure to order products that are shipped by Amazon.

Third-party products that are not shipped by Amazon charge their own shipping costs. You can identify Amazon shipping on any product by the words "FREE Shipping," "Shipped from Amazon," or the Prime logo.

#2 For non-Prime members, orders of $25 / €29 or more are free of shipping costs.

The prerequisite is that the products are delivered by Amazon. Therefore, again, look for the additional information "free shipping" and "shipping by Amazon".

#3 For non-Prime members, orders to a pickup station are cheaper or even free.

If you send an order under $25 / €29 to a postal pickup station, the shipping costs are either much cheaper or even free. I got free shipping in this way for products under 29 even without Prime membership.

#4 Become a Prime member to get free shipping on Amazon deliveries.

If you order a lot from Amazon or want to use the Amazon video streaming service, a Prime membership might pay off. As a Prime customer, all orders delivered from Amazon are free, regardless of order value, and Amazon also promises faster delivery and same-day delivery is cheaper for Prime customers.

In general, I find Amazon's shipping costs incredibly reasonable, even for non-Prime members.

What do you think about the shipping costs? Does a Prime membership pay off in your opinion?
