Modern humans, who seem to think themselves the dumbest species on the planet and want to regulate everything from biology to social behaviour, regularly underestimate themselves in their evolutionary learning experiences and just as permanently overestimate themselves in their ability to control.

Curiously I would think the opposite. I believe that the modern human in many things believes himself to be the smartest, and has an obsession to control and plan everything based on his fears and insecurities of what does not depend on himself. Of course, these "smart" people believe that the human is naturally an idiot, but not them. Although on the other hand, I would also say that many times I myself could fall into the temptation of wanting to be in control, and therefore, act artificially.

This is a mental experiment to which I would respond that I would probably live the same life with the very choices I made, based on my knowledge at that time. But since I know more today than I did when I was sixteen, twenty-five or thirty, I would do and decide some things differently.

Your answer is similar to mine. Although I am happy with how I am now, I would never have this same life again knowing that I can be better if I learn from my mistakes and don't make them again. Re-living my life exactly the same would mean not learning anything from all this life that I already lived.
