What they didn't realize is that it is often more accurate to slowly and carefully define what something is "not" instead of trying to dive directly into what something "is".

Absolutely agree. That's the reason why I think that many times the best way to search for the truth is with an apophatic methodology. There is wisdom in the refutation and denial of what is not.
