Just like Twitter which has a trending topics lists geography wise across the world, Google tried to imitate it.
Google has introduced a new trending feature section in search bar. There will be a list of trending topics based on your search list. Based on TechCrunch reports, these results will be based on location.
In this fast moving world, users do look for trending topics and Google has to keep its users updated. Earlier Google tried such trending feature but it give some irrelevant search results. And it did have a turn off feature. But Google has updated the trending feature with the given feedback from users.
So Google app, iOS and Android have similar features updated, these feature can be turned off in the settings section.
