Many people have been taught that the Sabbath is the seventh day. However, the New Testament reveals that God appointed another day for Christians. Let us examine what the Bible teaches.
In Hebrews chapter 4, the Apostle Paul addresses the Hebrews, who were the original keepers of the Sabbath. He explains that the Sabbath observed under Moses and Joshua was not the final Sabbath God intended for His people.
Let us read Hebrews 4:8. Paul teaches that if Joshua had truly given the people complete rest, God would not have spoken later about another day. This shows that God had prepared a different rest beyond the seventh-day Sabbath observed by Israel.
The Apostle Paul was speaking to the Hebrews themselves—the original Sabbath keepers—and he made it clear that God was pointing them to another day, not merely the Sabbath that Moses and Joshua established.
Furthermore, during His earthly ministry, the Lord Jesus Christ often challenged the way the Jews observed the Sabbath. Because of this, many Jewish leaders opposed Him and even sought to kill Him. They failed to understand that the Scriptures had already foretold a time when the old covenant, including the Sabbath regulations under Moses, would come to an end.
The observance of Sabbaths, new moons, and other ceremonial requirements belonged to the old covenant system. Hebrews 7:12 states that when there is a change in the priesthood, there must also be a change in the law.
This points to the time of reformation that came through the Lord Jesus Christ. When Christ became our High Priest, a new covenant was established. The law given through Moses was replaced by the law of Christ. Therefore, the regulations and ordinances that belonged to the Mosaic covenant were no longer binding under the new covenant established by Jesus Christ.
For this reason, believers are called to follow Christ under the new covenant, recognizing that God's plan was fulfilled through Him and that a greater spiritual rest is found in the Lord Jesus Christ.
