There’s a quality that sets some people apart. It is hard to define but easy to recognize. With it, you can take on the world; without it, you are stuck at the starting block of your potential.
All the renowned men and women you could ever think of possess this quality. And it is the primary reason they soar high and enjoy the benefits life has to offer. Now, the question you would want to ask is, ”What is this quality you’re talking about?" Or instead, “what is this thing in particular that makes these renown men and women different from the rest”? Well, I’m talking about self-confidence.
Self-confidence is what sets people apart. It is the magnetizing force that makes men attract everything they want and it is the driving force that pushes one to his destiny. Above all, it is the one thing you need to turn your life 360 degrees around from total obscurity to fulfillment.
So, in this article, we will be looking at;
With that being said, let’s dive into it.
The word “self-confidence” can mean different things to different people, but I would want to stick to how Courtney Ackerman defined it in her blog post "What is self-confidence? +9 ways to increase it". *
Self-confidence is an individual’s trust in his or her own abilities, capacities, and judgments, or belief that he or she can successfully face day-to-day challenges and demands.
I love this definition because it highlights two important concepts that are very important, and they are;
This implies that you know what you’re capable of, what your strengths and weaknesses are, and you’ve accepted your perfections as well as your imperfections. You don’t cast judgment on yourself based on your weaknesses, but you understand that there’s always room for improvement.
This is another important ingredient in self-confidence. The belief that you can do the best that you possibly can in any situation no matter how little. Storms may rise, rain may fall but you’ll still stand tall.
So, with this, you’ll understand that self-confidence is not bravado. It is not a facade or a show of delusion. It is the belief that one has in him or herself and abilities. With this belief comes the power to enjoy a strong sense of security, clarity, and trust in yourself.
Now that you’ve known what self-confidence is, here are some reasons why self-confidence is important in transforming your life.
With self-confidence, you learn to be brave. Show me someone who is paralyzed by fear, and I'll show you someone who lacks self-confidence. For every task ahead of you, you need to approach it with fearlessness, and you can only be fearless when you confide in yourself. That’s what self-confidence does. It makes you take risks that will push you out of your comfort zone.
Self-confidence helps build courage in pain or adversity. The true test of a person's character is how he reacts when he encounters setbacks. With self-confidence, you know you have what it takes to face any form of adversity. And anytime you tackle a difficult challenge, you grow your confidence a lot more.
This is simple. Anytime you find it difficult to take action, it means that you lack self-confidence. Confidence gives you the drive and inspiration to act despite your fears for you to achieve your goals and dreams.
Time after time, I have wondered what an interview looks like because I haven’t applied for a job before. So here comes my first interview, and I won’t lie to you, it scared me to death. Why won’t I be? It was my first time.
I prepared the best way I could, and the night before the interview, I had someone ask me real-time questions about what I should expect the next day. Yet, I was sweating and feeling nauseous at the same time.
The next day arrived, and I knew it was now or never. I said to myself, “It doesn’t matter if this is my first interview or not, but what I do know is that I’m going to have a lot of fun today." I believe that I have something to say, no matter how little it is, and I’ll say it today”.
As I stepped into the room and sat down, my mind became relaxed, my mood changed, and I noticed the tone of my voice changing even as I spoke. I knew within myself that something was happening, and I’m beginning to have confidence in myself. It struck the interviewers by how confident I was.
After the exercise, I couldn’t believe what had just happened to me. I was so happy, and in fact, I became more confident. I didn’t get the job though, because they thought I was demanding too much. It’s sad, but it was my first experience.
Next time, I’ll know how to answer questions regarding my salary expectations. But notwithstanding, I just discovered the hack to performing better in interviews, and that hack is self-confidence. With self-confidence, your performance becomes 10x better.
It is a fact that no one wants to be around a weakling and it is also a fact that everyone likes to hang around someone that they perceive to be self-confident. Self-confident people can work well and bring out the best in their team due to their influence. Their aura is contagious and team members can easily become motivated to get the job done.
Make a list of everyone you look up to and respect, you’ll find out that they are all self-confident people. Confident people often show that they are capable of getting the job done and as such, people always depend on them. All great leaders in history are confident and for that, they earn the respect of others.
If you lack self-confidence, you’ll always doubt yourself, which, in turn, would lead to a lack of trust in decision-making. Self-confident people trust themselves to make the right decisions, and even when those decisions are wrong, they easily make amends or move on to the next.
Confident people lead happier and more fulfilling lives than less confident people do.
Thankfully, there are a number of ways you can build your self-confidence. Here are some great tips that can help boost your confidence, whether you struggle to feel confident about anything or lack confidence in one particular area.
Any time you say something negative to yourself, your abilities becomes weakened. Just take a routine check on why you’re performing poorly or below standard in certain aspects of your life and you’ll find out that beneath those performances, there are some negative belief systems that you are holding on to. You must reprogram your mind by speaking positively to yourself. You become what you say to yourself.
Taking pride in yourself means you understand your value and your worth. People who take pride in themselves are curious about life and all it entails and for that, they bring energy and passion into all that they do which in turn inspires and motivates others. The more you take pride in yourself, the more confidence you have in your abilities as well.
Exercise is a real confidence booster. It helps reduce feelings of anxiety and depression thereby increasing a feeling of self-worth. You look so happy because you’re putting your body in great shape and you’re taking care of your health. The thought of this alone increases self-confidence.
Is there something that you’re good at? Is there something that seems effortless when you do it? Or something you’re passionate about? Then why not lean on that? And dont tell me you don’t have it. Of course, you do. It’s a matter of building on it and if you do, you’ll see how confident you’ll become in your own abilities.
Nothing builds your confidence more than “facing your fears”. People often think that you need confidence to face your fears, but guess what, that confidence will never come. On the contrary, you need to face your fears for you to build confidence. One major reason why you need to start doing the things you are afraid to do is that it will serve as a reference to do greater things in the future. So, anytime you want to undertake a new challenge, you can always reflect on the things you’ve done in the past, and this will both assure you and give you more confidence to do more.
Everyone has issues with self-confidence in one aspect of their lives or the other, and it takes time and effort to build your confidence.
It is a continuous process that anyone can engage in, and with time, you’ll see a tremendous change in your approach to things. You don’t have to live your entire life in fear.
I believe that if you apply those tips I’ve shared above, it will help you to be more confident. I would also recommend that you read “Feel the fear and do it anyway”- by Susan Jeffers. This book is a no-brainer and it will help build your self-confidence.
Thanks for reading my blog post. Have a nice day and always remember that you have greatness in you.
