Its more complicated than that, there also is the Cargo trait on ships.
The trader bonus requires the Cargo trait, such as found on the Drachian Mantis or Korman Cargo, so it doesn't actually give you bonuses with the Columbus.

I found that out while interrogating people for my own theory crafting ;)
