I have written several times about Internet Of Things (IOT) and home automation. This made my interest even greater and I started Home Automation via the Home Assistant framework. Home Assistant is an open source project with a very large community where you can get a lot of information.
I have Home Assistant running on a Raspberry PI Model 3B with a standard image. It is only to format an SD card correctly and it is good to go.
Last week I tried to get started with Domoticz, but Home Assistant seems a bit easier to get things going.
First I connected my smart meter again to map the consumption and yield. The standard graphs are not too nice so I started looking for possible plugins. Now it appears that Grafana is a nice add-on that you can integrate within Home Assistant. Grafana is also open source and you can use it to create beautiful graphics that you can then display on the Home Assistant dashboard.
The following data comes as standard from the smart meter:
- Use phase 1
- Consumption phase 2
- Consumption phase 3
- Phase 1 yield
- Phase 2 yield
- Phase 3 yield
- Total consumption low rate
- Total consumption high rate
- Total revenue low rate
- Total revenue high rate
Now the overview of the different phases is very much to show in a screen so I have configured it so that you only see the total of the 3 phases together, as well as consumption and yield. However, I also wanted to see the consumption per day to see what (among other things) our new heat pump is actually using.
I have now achieved that and therefore gain more insight into consumption. The next step is to arrange this for other devices in the house as well, this can be done fairly easily by smart plugs, which indicate what a device consumes and you can then release grafana on it.
In addition to the smart meter, I also housed my smart lamps in Home Assistant. For now, the only functionality is that I can turn them on or off (in groups) or give them a different color. But when I get the configuration that far I also want to use real automation. But I need a number of other smart devices for that :)
The next thing I want to buy is a co2 meter. We have a fireplace that extracts the air for combustion from the environment (so our living room). In theory, this can mean that too little oxygen enters the air. What I would like to automate is that when the oxygen level comes to a low level I get a message (or the one that is in the room at that moment) so that a window can be opened for a moment.
And so there are many more smart things to come up with that are really handy to use, for example, that the screens automatically go down or up based on the heat or the sun.
I will keep you informed about my project, but this weekend I will continue with the hobby and hope to make some progress.
Have a great day,
Peter
