The road cut the forest treacherously and left only narrow by-lanes that made it uneasy for the small car to pursue its crossing. The day was cloudy and the sun was hidden. It made for a grey and dark sky that was interrupted only by the difference in the shade of grey.
“Let’s stop here for lunch. I’m hungry” she said as they drove. He really didn’t feel like it, but he slowed and exited the little path and parked.
“At least let’s take a walk” she said and got out. She walked to the back of the car and opened both rear doors. Most of the car rear space was taken by the luggage and the chairs they carried. However there was still enough for two persons to fit in the back.
Sitting in the back seat she said, “Did you bring enough?”
“Yes” he lied. It was simply the nature of the small tracer that he had to say that. This was not the first time they were camping like this.
“What do you think, should we go up?” she asked as she opened the backpack that they had packed.
“What? We’ve seen enough of this road anyway” he replied.
“Don’t be so negative. Maybe if we look around we can find a better path” she said and pulled out some electronic equipment that they had invested in. The first she held was a common transmitter. It was used to measure distances and for other things that the modern generations could do without.
“It’s too foggy to find our way around. This is just a guess, we might find anything” he said, watching her through the rear mirror.
“You’re right” she said as she abandoned the equipment, “But it is just a suggestion, you don’t have to listen to me”.
“You are such a contrary woman” he said, “After all we do have a lot of money”. There was a sudden smile on her face.
“It’s just that the sight of your sweet reaction makes me feel slightly warm in my chest.”
“I really doubt that” he replied with a laugh, “You like to set me up every time.”
“And you like to get me set up.” She replied.
“I do” he admitted.
“I wish I had met you before” she said seriously. She moved to the back of the car for the second time and opened the door.
It was a small exercise area. There was a solitary tree near the lake. The place was deserted and they could talk freely.
“How do you know I would be before?”
“I am hopelessly in love with you” she replied seriously.
“I know” he said quickly.
“But that doesn’t mean I would not also believe that I have a premonition” she said.
“A premonition?” he asked.
“Yes, a premonition. I had a feeling that this was the right time to tell you” she said and sat on the ground.
He stood near her and leaned against the trunk of the tree.
“I also had a premonition, just this morning – a feeling” she said.
“A feeling?”
“You needed to hear me.”
“You need to hear you.” he responded, “You are the one who needs to be heard”.
“Why?”
“I can see it in the way you walk, that you have been bothering about something. Tell me what,” he said. She suddenly changed the form of her question and said, “We have a lot more to know about each other. How long will you keep me at arms length?”
“That’s what your premonition talked about?”
“Yes. Ever since the day we met I felt an irresistible pull from you. I kept pushing away but it was only making you more distant. That’s why I told you that this time I am up for a premonition.”
“You mean I had acted kind of crazy this morning? I have misunderstood you?”
“I was preoccupied with how you lied to get me to be here.
