February 07, 1964 was a momentous occasion in music history. This was the day when The Beatles arrived on their first visit to the United States. Thousands of screaming fans turned out at Kennedy Airport to greet the new British band as they arrived for their first U.S. tour.
To say The Beatles were popular is an understatement. When they made their first U.S. television performance on the Ed Sullivan Show, it was difficult to hear them over the screams of teenage girls. It is reported that a record 73 million Americans watched from their homes (40 percent of the population!).
The band stayed at the iconic Plaza Hotel in Manhattan. Hundreds upon hundreds greeted them when they arrived to the site and some were even overcome by their magnetism and fainted.
After all their appearances on radio, television and sold-out concerts, they returned to England on February 22.
