Did you know about Freelensing??

Ever heard of tilt-shift photography?? Well, freelensing is almost a similar way of getting a tilt-shift effect but in a relatively inexpensive way..

Had been seeing a lot of photographs on this and always wondered if there was a way to do this without spending a bomb on a tilt-shift lens.. And that’s when one of my team members offered help and taught me how to do it.. And so I thought let me share my experience here..

The entire idea behind freelens photography it to get the ability to change the point of focus and give some pretty cool light leaks.. And all this is achieved by not attaching the lens to the camera..

I used a Canon DSLR, but you can achieve this with a Nikon too.. I used a 50mm f/1.8 which worked perfectly..

The technique gives an almost perfect result.. The problem faced was that one needs a lot of patience to take this shot.. So you need a lot of practice to shoot as well as it has to be shot on manual mode.. You need to move the lens back and forth from the sensor to get the focus right..

Few things to note:

1. The focus point is tough to handle.. You need to be able to nail the focus on the spot you want..
2. After a lot of practice, I finally was able to get the focus up close.. If you can get the right angle and set up, then there can be two focus points just like a tilt shift lens..
3. Light leaks are a really cool but only when they are controlled..
4. This is for people who love Bokeh effects and if you can get it right, the results will blow your mind..
5. The vignette effect just ensures that the focus is perfect..
6. Since the lens isn’t mounted on the camera there is a high chance of dust entering.. So you need to clean your gears as soon as you finish the shoot..
7. Yes, this is a lot different.. It gives us a line of focus shot..

I was able to get some shots of Sharanya during her wedding coverage and I’m a bit happy with the end result..
