Reporting daily to work was one of the usual arrangements and patterns. Even till date, parents find it weird to see their kids work from home, because going to your job has been the realistic option for them. Remote jobs are really changing the labor market rapidly.
In recent years, alot of young people prefer to work from home rather than dressing up in corporate and going to the office daily. I can't help but wonder how the labour market has changed drastically. There's more competition and willingness to work in the remote workspace than in the office now. I'm beginning to wonder if people will ever embrace the traditional way again, because it's really relieving, efficient and more comfortable working at the comfort of your home, than working in an office. That's why I believe working from home is here to stay. The traditional way isn't replacing it soon. The only challenge that has to be faced is the increasing competition, which might make it really difficult for individuals to obtain remote jobs and positions.
Remote work gained its popularity and increased drastically during the COVID-19 pandemic. That was a period that left many companies with no other option than working from home, because offices weren't authorized to function for the safety of the people, physical offices were closed and online offices gave room to the realization that most positions can function from home, that even after there was a permit for physical changes, a new system was introduced to us, and it made work and life easier. Remote work has become a suitable and sustainable way of working for many till date.
Now we are faced with a rising competition in remote work too. Remote work is highly competitive because it's favourable to all, it is favourable to the pregnant woman, physically challenged person, nursing mother, etc. Anyone can work from home and their physical condition can't be a hindrance to them. Remote jobs just require mental strength and the ability to execute the task given. Remote jobs also attract people from different parts of the world, cities and continents, because location isn't a barrier and this has made competition very high in remote jobs, workers just have to compete and do better to qualify for a remote job. Remote jobs create hundreds of qualified candidates for a job.
And because of this competition, people who can't get a remote job accept going to an office job. I believe they accept this because they couldn't acquire a remote job and can't risk being jobless. Also, some people still desire and prefer to work in an office daily.
Regardless of the popularity remote jobs have gained, they can't be accepted in certain professions, because some professions will always require a physical presence. For instance, in the medical lane, the doctors, laboratory scientists and nurses can't work from home. Even in factory work, human power requires a physical present.
I believe the future will be a combination of remote, hybrid and traditional employment. Remote jobs can't replace every position, being present in the office is still important to achieve success in the workplace.
In the future, remote work might be difficult to obtain, it might require more than a degree, certain degrees will be required, like digital knowledge, experience, specialized skills, communicative skills and many others. The ability to work independently will be necessary to acquire one. So those who want to work remotely will need to upgrade their skills and knowledge in the future. With the competition and how saturated remote workers are currently to keep a remote job, improving knowledge and skills will be necessary to avoid replacement.
The future will be about having the flexibility to work wherever the nature of our jobs allows and the skills we have built to remain/stay valuable wherever the workplace happens to be, whether it's remote or from the office.
