Absent the Early Heavy Bombardment, the Earth would probably have a sealed 'lid' and life would not have the churn of resources to consume and niches to occupy. The astounding thing to me is that life was beginning during the Hadean, in such niches where stable bits of crust weren't inundated with sterilizing heat.

Earth is a continuous chain of miracles, AFAICT. We are the result of such incredible, inconceivable good fortune it is beyond my ken - but not my gratitude.
