I'll drink to that! Just kidding. I was fortunate enough to despise the bitter burn of alcohol growing up, and so avoided the lure of drinking problems that laid low half of my classmates by the time I was 30. Rates of every vice are basically doubled in Alaska, and drinking particularly takes a toll. Winters are long, a lot of time is spent indoors, and there weren't a lot of options for entertainment back in the day.

I was lucky. I wish more people I'd grown up with were too.
