I have to agree that China is a very serious government, albeit corrupt and despotic to the core. I cannot believe that they would undertake a quarantine on such a scale for psyops. I personally suspect this virus is something that escaped from the lab in Wuhan, as it apparently is a frankenvirus with a bat coronavirus envelope, and bat coronavirus was a competency of Wuhan. A bioweapon that has accidentally been released among their own isn't something that China is likely to publicly reveal, IMHO. The measures they've taken to stop it's spread certainly appear to be all out attempts to stop such a bioweapon.

Given the worst reports of infection rates a few days ago, it's possible that perhaps millions of people are now infected in China. Up to 5 days of asymptomatic infection and a similar persistence time outside hosts potentiates maximal transmission rates. If the virulence of this disease is high, the death toll could be genocidal.

Regardless of the relative existential danger to humanity, were I Chinese today, I would be utterly devoted to the removal and destruction of the CCP due to this. Absent absolute proof, I would be convinced this was an illegal bioweapon that bad government afflicted it's people with, and no more argument would be necessary to convince me than only the end of that form of government utterly would satisfactorily resolve the risk to my people.

While my speculations may seem like worst case scenarios, sadly this seems to be the best interpretation of the available evidence. We will shortly know, as not even the most draconian government could keep millions of casualties in a few weeks covert given todays surveillance technology.

Let's hope and pray that my concern is simply the result of bad information due to the oppressive censorship China's ruling class are deploying to save face. They are certainly not quarantining 50+ million people to save face, however. The only reason they would do that is to save their lives. China has been in a precarious economic position lately, and the economic consequences of this quarantine will be disastrous.
