Back in the 90s my eldest was almost killed in city traffic, and we made a run for his life into the countryside.

This is one of the reasons I do what I do, repairing and improving my neighbors homes well, and inexpensively. Today when I was leaving work, one of the neighbors whose home I previously worked on flagged me down and gave me a bunch of food, mostly cookies (a soft spot of mine LOL). I just got off the phone where I sought to arrange another neighbor to get some leftover materials from the job I'm on now. As I work to benefit them, I seek to get them to work with each other, and discuss how they can produce themselves the things they need, such as with a garden.

There are far better means of securing you and yours from armed thugs than firearms today. Firearms have been obsolete for a long time, and modern technology avails us myriad means of preventing sacks of meat from reaching our door, which they must do if they're going to drag us out of bed at 2am.

Decentralized means of making such things has only recently become available, and since overlords want to prevent us from being secure, rather than facilitate our security, we are neither taught about such security technology nor are able to purchase it through centralized retail outlets. With a bit of digging and scratching we sure can learn of it and make it ourselves, though.

Some years ago I watched a video of an Aussie that built a cruise missile in his garage for ~$5k, ~$995,000 less than it cost the USG to buy theirs. Of course it didn't have a warhead, and used a pulse jet rather than a more sophisticated (and quiet!) engine, but it was able to precisely target using GPS and had nominal range, and explosives are ridiculously facile of manufacture.

We may not have much call for cruise missiles in the coming revolutions, but cheap drones and all sorts of tech that can be built at home have also become possible. You may not have a gun, but with a bit of ingenuity, you can keep anyone with a gun far enough away that guns won't matter. They really are obsolete in a world with cheap microwaves.
