"I remember back to a time when a conservative and a liberal gentleman would have long discussion about their viewpoints."
So do I, and in fact I still do this. It doesn't always turn out to be pleasant discussion over tea and crumpets, and some of the people become so impolite it is impossible to continue, some of them do not discuss in good faith, but seek weaknesses or enough information to dox, or even fabricate false allegations, and so forth. Several of my interlocutors have vacillated between rage and resumption of civil discourse, although it can take weeks before they cool their jets. What I have learned is that such discussion is facilitated with even the actually diagnosable mentally ill if one maintains polite etiquette, and can even so gain their ear to bring them round on topics of discussion.
However, this cannot be done for people that act in bad faith, and I have found it is a waste of time to attempt civil discourse with people that are seeking to use your words to lie and bear false witness against you. I recently spent a few days discussing environmental issues with someone whom I at first took at face value, but over time they revealed that their initial claims of confusion or disagreement weren't true, and instead they were trying to get information about me they could use to harm me. Once someone lies to you never believe anything they say again. Following this policy will save you much trouble.
If we build bridges with forthright people that are misled about matters, by demonstrating good character and remaining respectful in discussion we can enable them to grasp reason, and being verbally abusive will never have this result, even if you're technically right about something, unless you're able to convey it in a respectful and reasonable way you will only widen divisions.
"...we have correctly denoted that "drug use" destroys society,"
I vehemently disagree, and I can change your mind about this. I can't do it if I call you a wannabe tyrant or a fool, but I can by politely pointing out that you do drugs every day, and without the benefit of some drug or another you likely would not be alive today. Your blanket statement about drugs refers to medicine as much as to what you meant, which is prohibited drugs, and I am confident that you will now change your statement as a result of my polite disagreement to refer only to certain drugs you have been told are intolerably bad.
Do correct me if I'm wrong, but if I am not, please do correct your misstatement so that we can come closer to agreement.
Thanks!
