Recommendation 💀 The Punisher: One Last Kill [Eng/Esp]

I hope you’re all well. With all the free time I’ve had lately, I decided to make the most of it by watching the films and series I’d left on my watchlist, so this time I opted for the recently released special of The Punisher: One Last Kill.

Just to clarify, before watching the ‘One Last Kill’ special, you should first watch the series The Punisher and, if you like, Daredevil: Born Again, which takes place before and during ‘One Last Kill’ and is set a month before Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Now, “One Last Kill” picks up where the final season of The Punisher left off, with a Frank Castle who is more psychotic than usual and hallucinating about his fellow marines, his family, Karen, and himself in his role as The Punisher.

Frank tries to leave his life as a vigilante behind, having wiped out the Gnuccis, but without a purpose, traumatised and unable to distinguish reality, he finds himself lost. But as a result of having exterminated the Gnuccis, a power vacuum has been left in Little Sicily, causing chaos to reign in the streets and horrific crimes to be committed on every corner you walk down.

But now, there is a price on his head, so every criminal or thug in Little Sicily will be after him; so whilst he is hallucinating, he tries to survive whilst ensuring he doesn’t drag any innocent people into his crusade.

Well, I must say that this is essentially Frank’s journey: discovering who he is without his vengeance, whilst being haunted by the ghosts of his past. The special seeks to bring about a shift in Frank’s mindset and in The Punisher’s mission; it is no longer about rage, anger and revenge, but about protection.

The first 15 minutes of the special feature a psychotic and wavering Frank, until a switch flips and his instincts kick in, turning the following scenes into a sequence of criminal slaughter, with everything in his path getting mowed down. It is literally a street massacre, pure action that seems never-ending, and a Frank who, with every innocent person he saves, realises his purpose.

I feel this special served as a sort of mini ‘character study’, where we see Frank at his lowest ebb, emotionally vulnerable and on the brink of collapse, paving the way for a better version of himself. The tone is dark and violent, as is usually the case with him, accompanied by a very good street fight.

Now, what I didn’t like very much is that I feel 50 minutes weren’t enough to develop in depth the transition from this Punisher driven by revenge and pain to one who finally finds a purpose to follow.

So I feel it lacked development, beyond the familiar violence, that would have allowed the cycle of vengeance to be brought to a close. Plus, the ‘all in 50 minutes’ format they gave it made it feel a bit rushed – intense, but rushed. Apart from that, I quite liked it; it was entertaining and served to set the stage for The Punisher in upcoming Marvel films and series.

Espero que se encuentren bien. Con el tiempo libre que tengo últimamente, decidí aprovechar para ver las películas y series que había dejado en lista de espera, por lo que esta vez me decidí por el especial que estrenaron hace poco de the punisher:one last kill.

Como aclaración antes de ver el especial de “La última muerte”, primero deben ver la serie The Punisher y, si quieren, Daredevil. Born Again, que sucede antes-durante “la última muerte” y situada un mes antes de Spider-Man. Brand new day. Ahora, “la última muerte” arranca donde terminó la última temporada de The Punisher, con un Frank Castle más psicótico de lo normal y alucinando con sus compañeros marines, su familia, Karen y consigo mismo en su papel de The Punisher.

Frank trata de dejar su vida atrás como vigilante, tras haber acabado con los Gnucci, pero sin un propósito, traumado y sin distinguir la realidad, se encuentra perdido. Pero como consecuencia de haber exterminado a los Gnucci, quedó un vacío de poder en Little Sicily, lo que hace que el caos reine en las calles y se cometan crímenes horribles en cada esquina donde camines.

Pero ahora, su cabeza tiene un precio, por lo que ahora, cada criminal o idiota de Little Sicily irá tras él, por lo que mientras alucina, trata de sobrevivir intentando no arrastrar a ningún inocente en la cruzada.

Bien, debo decir que esto es básicamente el camino de Frank, por descubrir quién es sin su venganza, mientras es atormentado por los fantasmas de su pasado. El especial busca establecer un cambio en la mentalidad de Frank y en la misión de The Punisher; ya no se trata de rabia, ira y venganza, sino de proteger.

Los primeros 15 minutos del especial son de un Frank psicótico y dudando, para que con un interruptor activen su instinto y las siguientes escenas se conviertan en una secuencia de masacre de criminales con todo lo que se encuentre en el camino. Es literalmente una masacre callejera, acción pura que parece no acabar, y un Frank que, con cada persona inocente que salva, se da cuenta de su propósito.

Siento que este especial sirvió como una especie de pequeño “estudio de personaje”, donde se ve a Frank en su punto más bajo, vulnerable emocionalmente y al borde del colapso, para dar paso a una mejor versión de él. El tono es oscuro y violento, como suele ser él, acompañado de una muy buena pelea callejera.

Ahora, lo que no me gustó mucho es que siento que 50 minutos no fueron suficientes para desarrollar con profundidad la transición de este The Punisher movido por la venganza y el dolor a uno que encuentra por fin un propósito que seguir.

Por lo que siento que le faltó desarrollo, más allá de la violencia conocida, que permitiera dar por cerrado el ciclo de venganza. Además de que el formato “todo en 50 minutos” que le dieron, hizo que se sintiera un poco rápido, intenso pero rápido. Exceptuando esto, me gustó bastante, fue entretenido y sirvió para darle paso a The Punisher para las próximas películas y series de Marvel.
