This was a very small study with results depending on self reporting by participants. How they chose to report could have swung the results by quite a bit because the size of the trial was very small. Although it has been known in virology that interference from vaccines can happen for 60+ years.

If true, the influenza vaccine would protect against a more serious flu compared to a slightly higher chance of catching a less severe upper tract infection. Much more study is needed on this.
