Broken dreams
I'm sitting here in St. Louis waiting on Eric. Soulard is an old part of the city. Where I am right now is called State Streets. A lot of the buildings here are falling down or crumbling. There are some

We don't care anymore
While we come from the same base, Gammy and I don't always see eye to eye on current events. She tends more to pessimism while I more to optimism. I do concede that her views are more realistic than mine

Do you remember when...
Remember that time CNN apologized for concocting the story about Nick Sandmann? Remember that time President Clinton owned up to his sexual deviancy in the White House? Remember that time ATF and the FBI

It does not matter how much evidence you have.
People are going to believe whatever they choose to believe. And yes, what they believe is a choice. People choose to believe the Earth is flat... People choose to believe that masks are effective... People

Looking out my front door
6" (15.4cm) of snow yesterday is what they were calling for. It's -1°F/-18°C but the sun is shining. The snow plow blocked me in so I've got to dig that out today. Beautiful day!

Not many moving about
I don't know if it's because of the inclement weather or because it's (not my) President's Day but there were very few people on the road today or moving about in general. This is the Mississippi River

Siren whispers
He came awake waist deep in the tepid water. He had been drawn here by the lonely song of a siren somewhere out of there. Still he could hear her whispers in his head as he waded back to shore. Josh! Come

Send it
While 500 yards may not seem like a long distance to you, for a first time shooter, this is a pretty good distance. Back in October, Gammy and I went to a yearly gathering in Texas. There was a rifle range

Yes. In all things give thanks.
It's 16°F here in southern Illinois this morning. Not to bad if your vehicle has decent heat. The heater in my truck struggles to keep up, but I'm thankful that it does. The alternator light came on as

Is it too much to ask?
This is what I found yesterday morning in a basement in St. Louis. That gas pipe is about an inch away from the front of that handy box and switch. Why? I find stuff like this more often than you'd think.

A dying Southern tradition
It is a custom with rural people down south to turn up to the house of someone who has just lost a family member. Ladies tend to show up with food: fried chicken, peas or beans, cakes, pies. Some show

The hunting guide
It was a thing that he had a love/hate relationship with - being a guide. Thankfully, though, he only had to do it for the bigger hunts when people would come from 3 or 4 states to participate. Coon hunting

First goal of an electrician
Don't get electrocuted. That probably goes without saying. I do get the occasional shock but not near as often as I used to. The photo above is of an old power entrance panel in a church in St. Louis that

Out for a stroll
Some time in October of '86, I went to the Japanese island of Kyushu. A brigade-size element had been deployed there for joint training with the JGSDF (Japanese Ground Self Defense Force). I learned a

Critical failure
High above the planet, a weapons platform hangs in the sky. It has gone dark. It sends no telemetry. Ground Control has not been able to reestablish communication with it or get it to accept a reboot command.
