The phenomena of not caring about lip syncing seems to combine with the 'demand for equality' whereby competition ends and everyone is 'treated the same'. 'We don't care about actual talent because everyone is talented' etc.

On the one hand, I actually agree that competition is nowhere near as healthy or powerful as co-operation (which is both confirmed by my own experience and pretty much every scientific study into the topic in history). On the other hand, denying reality is extremely dangerous and trying to pretend that some people have skills that others don't is not going to achieve anything beneficial.

I feel like this has a connection to the development of the internet and the replacement of the centralised media networks with social media. Previously it was essentially impossible for people without outstanding talent to gain global attention because of the costs involved. No-one was going to pay for transportation and promotion of the people unless they thought they would recoup their costs - so the people needed to be genuinely talented. Obviously, now, the situation is upside down from that and anyone can become 'famous' (for 10 seconds) online (at least among their own peers) for doing 'something' and this has affected even the alleged 'top tier' performers too, to the point where they are almost all just empty and cynical shells of people.

The truly talented people still exist, but they are mostly relegated to their own communities of niche fans, rather than being globally appreciated.
