It was another fantastic day as I leveled up two more cards in my deck. This upgrade is particularly special because these are among the first cards I鈥檝e managed to take to Level 4鈥攚hich is currently the maximum level for cards in my deck. While I haven't reached Level 5 yet, hitting Level 4 is a significant achievement; for instance, a Common card requires a total of 30 copies to reach Level 4. However, this requirement varies by rarity: Rare cards need 25 copies, Epic cards require combining 20 copies, and for Legendary cards, Level 4 is the cap, requiring a combination of 11 copies. All in all, even though the number of required copies decreases with higher rarity, pulling those higher-rarity cards is much harder, making it challenging to keep leveling them up consistently.
Of the two cards I upgraded to Level 4 today, the 'Palimpsest Prophet'鈥攁 Life-element melee attack card鈥攊s my favorite. It proves to be an excellent choice, especially in Low Mana battles, because its stats offer a perfect blend of attributes. New players might wonder why the card provides 2 Health and 2 Armor separately instead of just 4 Health points; however, experienced players know that without the 'Piercing' ability, even a melee or ranged attack with 10 power will only destroy the Armor if even a single point of it exists, thereby offering you a significant defensive advantage. Looking at its stats, it is a melee attacker that can strike from any position in the lineup thanks to the 'Charge' ability, and it also possesses the 'Flying' ability, which provides up to 25% protection against melee and ranged attacks. Overall, it is a fantastic card despite being a 'Common' rarity; I had hoped for a +1 boost to its attack power at Level 4, but instead, it received a +1 increase to its Health. While this is still a solid upgrade, an improvement in attack power would have been even better.
The second card upgraded to Level 4 today also belongs to the Life element; it is named 'Phlegmor'. It is a melee card equipped with all the essential stats鈥攊ncluding armor, health, and decent speed鈥攁long with the 'Sneak' ability, which allows it to attack from any position in the lineup. Its low mana cost makes it a comfortable choice for battles. Although its base attack power is modest, it can be boosted using cards with the 'Inspire' ability or specific summoners. To be honest, I rarely use this card, but technically鈥攁t least in terms of stats鈥攊t is superior to the 'Palimpsest Prophet'. However, this is the first card I鈥檝e encountered where advancing to a higher level resulted in a stat reduction alongside an upgrade. Yes, I couldn't believe it at first; I even refreshed the page, but the stats remained unchanged. It is a strange but true fact that upgrading to Level 4 caused a loss of 1 Health point while adding the 'Strengthen' ability. While 'Strengthen' boosts the health of all team cards by +1鈥攅ffectively restoring this card's health to its Level 3 value鈥攊t seems odd to reduce the card's base health only to compensate for it via an ability.
Splinterlands isn't an easy place, but that's what makes it even more fun. A perfect strategy takes into account many factors, including stats, abilities, rulesets, mana caps, and more. That's why it's even more important to consider all these factors when developing a strategy.
