We all sell.

Whether we want to or not, we constantly sell. Sometimes you sell products, sometimes you sell yourself, sometimes you sell an idea you believe in.

Examples of Sales Situations

  1. Selling goods
  2. Finding jobs/Selling yourself
  3. Selling ideas/Spreading a message

Being active and pursuing a sale is a good thing. Perseverance definitely pays off. The problem is when people become desperate.

What happens when people see desperation.

  1. They start wondering if something is wrong with your product or idea.
  2. They don't want to have deals with you in the future.

How to avoid the desperate salesperson dilemma.

  1. Set clear expectation. If this is the sales of a product, and you want to follow up with the customer, set an appointment. This is a great way to see if the lead is interested. If this is an interview, be specific about what kind of work you would like to do.
  2. Gauge need. Let's say you're selling a smartphone. Talk to the customer, and find out what their life is like. Tailor your sale specifically to that customer and why that phone is optimal for their lifestyle.
  3. Sometimes it isn't meant to be, so move on. This is true for sales, or even for job interviews. For sales, leaving a customer who didn't buy what you we're selling on good terms motivates them to come back when the need arises. For an employer, if you were not a good fit but they liked you as a person, they will keep you in mind for positions that suit you better.
