FIN
I have offended God and humanity because my work was not of the quality it should have been.
— Leonardo Da Vinci
Michel couldn't quite understand what was happening; Laura shuddered just by stepping into the confines of the room upstairs. The words stuck in her throat. Not even a hint of an explanation escaped her jaws.
Michel decided to enter the unknown and tangible room; and he saw nothing extraordinary, on the contrary, it was just an old room full of hidden corpuscles and vermin. He turned back and saw Laura's pale face getting more and more wrinkled; it was as if a spell had been cast on her so that time would consume her quickly.
The boy did not stop watching her until a faint chuckle broke out. He looked around, searching for the source until he came upon an old sheet covering something. Laura moaned in silent fear, paralyzed like a statue, while she watched; without even saying a word, as Michel slowly approached the sheet to discover the mystery it concealed.
Michel was hired by the executors of the Vivaldi family to take care of Mrs. Laura, the only survivor of the tragedy that occurred in their house. First, he saw her husband, Roberto, drowning in the bathtub, then he found Camilo, her youngest son, lifeless in one of the rocking chairs. Then she found Romina lying on top of the piano without breathing; and finally, she found Filomena; the maid, stuffed in a closet with her eyes glassy like a fish and her body stiff.
Laura was left in a catatonic state and the end, she was found with almost no vital signs. The police found no traces leading to a culprit; they suspected Laura for a while, but the hypotheses were not conclusive. Mrs. Vivaldi was gradually recovering from her condition. Her speech was still not perfect and her muscles from the waist down did not work one hundred percent.
Michel, the youngest nurse in the department, was assigned to care for Laura and did an excellent job. When the doctors decided to send Laura home, Michel went with her; working as a full-time nurse.
Michel was optimistic and believed in his patient's recovery. There was a tenderness in his eyes that he conveyed fluently. His smiling face and warm hands quickly restored hope to poor Laura. She was beginning to articulate words; with great effort, but she managed it, and her legs began to react.
They were months of tranquility that led to a path of recovery, but the fatal shadows of panic began to resurface again, and Laura could feel them moving on the strands of her pale hair.
Sleepless nights accompanied by screams of anxiety. Incessant noises played between the walls calling the attention of their lively inhabitants. Laughter escaping from some doorway or entrance to an unholy world. Michel did not want to believe taking as an excuse the games of the mind, until one day; his eyes witnessed something that logic could not explain.
A transparent arm, silvery like the moon, was revealed in one of the corners of the corridor. Michel carried in his hands a tray with Laura's food, which he dropped to the floor because of the impression of what he saw.
A female body was revealed coming closer to its victim. Michel could not even speak, but he made out as much as he could. He noticed that the physical features of that woman were identical to Laura's; only younger, thinner, and with a strange aura of malice.
A piercing scream echoed through the walls and made the specter vanish. Michel reacted and went to the source of the riot to find Laura trembling and her face wet with tears. The nurse tried to calm her down until another shrill noise manifested itself; accompanied by a bombastic laughter.
The sound seemed to come from the room upstairs; Michel went upstairs to investigate, taking Laura with him, as he did not want to leave her alone. The abandoned room that housed the mystery was Laura's undoing. As Michel was about to uncover the enigma, Laura was consumed as if death was in a hurry to take her away.
When he removed the sheet he realized that it covered a mirror, and from it immediately manifested what seemed to be the young version of Laura. The specter tried to strangle Michel, but he was faster and freed himself. He ran towards Laura and took her in his arms; he was a little surprised to realize that her body was lighter than usual.
She managed to get out the front door and stopped in the front garden. He gasped several times and looked out the windows. As he fixed his face on Laura again, his eyes bugged out in horror; for he realized that her arms only held a body of ashes.
