Recently I remembered that 'Velma' had premiered on HBO Max, and I decided to look at it. Before its premiere, I came across several reviews; the same as always: if they changed her skin color if they changed her culture if they changed her personality. I, tired of those things, decided to look at it and forge my review of the series.
There are a lot of contexts here, after its premiere, the controversies increased and were not long in coming. Not only the 'anti-progressive' sector launched their bad reviews, but also the 'progressives' themselves, who saw the series as an insult to different social groups.

Hace poco me acordé que se había estrenado por HBO Max ‘Velma’, y decidí echarle un vistazo. Antes de su estreno, me topé con varias críticas; las mismas de siempre: que si le cambiaron el color de piel, que si le cambiaron la cultura, que si le cambiaron la personalidad. Yo, cansado de esas cosas, decidí echarle un ojo y forjar mi propia crítica sobre la serie.
Hay mucho contexto aquí, luego de su estreno, las polémicas aumentaron y no se hicieron esperar. No solo el sector ‘anti-progresista’ lanzó sus malas críticas, sino también los mismos ‘progres’, que vieron la serie como un insulto a los diferentes grupos sociales.
The series was created by Mindy Kaling (who also voices the main character), along with Charlie Grandy, two of the minds responsible for 'The Office', one of the best comedy series in history. Maintaining that characteristic black humor that has brought them both critical acclaim and ovations. Both are back again with this new animation for adults, in which we have as a protagonist Velma Dinkley, the brain of the famous gang of teenagers, solving mysteries of Scooby Doo.
In this version, young Velma, an unpopular and weird girl, tries to solve a series of murders that occur in her high school, and, to solve them, she must use her wits before the riddle leaves her brainless; literally.
Only two episodes have been released and I don't know if there will be an HBO renewal. The reviews have been too harsh, especially on sites like IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes, made by the general public. This was to be expected since when you change the look or race of a fictional character that was already predetermined, people react badly. A recent example is the Live Action of 'The Little Mermaid', which people have not stopped trashing ad nauseam just because they made the main character black.
La serie fue creada por Mindy Kaling (quien también hace la voz del personaje principal), junto a Charlie Grandy, dos de las mentes responsables de ‘The Office’, una de las mejores series de comedia de la historia. Manteniendo ese característico humor negro que los ha llevado tanto a críticas como a ovaciones. Ambos vuelven de nuevo con esta nueva animación para adultos, en la que tenemos como protagonista a Velma Dinkley, el cerebro de la famosa pandilla de adolescentes, resuelve misterios de Scooby Doo.
En esta versión, la joven Velma, una chica impopular y rara, trata de resolver una serie de asesinatos que ocurren en su secundaria, y, para resolverlos, deberá utilizar su ingenio antes de que el enigma la deje sin cerebro; literalmente.
Solo se han estrenado dos episodios y no sé si habrá una renovación de HBO. Las críticas han sido demasiado duras, en especial en páginas como Imdb y Rotten Tomatoes, realizadas por el público en general. Esto era de esperarse, ya que cuando se cambia el aspecto o la raza de un personaje de ficción que ya estaba predeterminado, la gente reacciona mal. Un ejemplo reciente es el Live Action de ‘The Little Mermaid’, que la gente no ha parado de echar basura hasta el cansancio solo porque hicieron al personaje principal de raza negra.
But my interest in Velma was not because of any of those things; nor the controversy that was generated around it, or anything like that, it would be absurd. My interest came from the team behind the show, especially Mindy Kalling. I'm a fan of 'The Office', I also enjoyed 'The Mindy Project', I like the kind of absurd comedy that is handled here. I'm also a lifelong Scooby Doo fan, and can I just say, I found this new version intriguing.
Well, let's talk a little bit about the kind of comedy that is handled in the series. Nowadays, making black humor is considered 'frowned upon', since we live in the so-called 'crystal generation', where you have to be careful with what you say because you can offend others. You have to be smart nowadays if you want to dedicate yourself to comedy. A series like 'The Office', for example, would not have been well accepted in this era in which we live, and I'm sure it would also have been the target of harsh criticism from a progressive audience.
Black humor has always been characterized by making fun of stereotypes; things that most people think, but don't dare to say in public. A stereotype is an image that is held about a group of people who share the same tastes and hobbies, which leads them to have certain behavior before society; for example, saying that all gays listen and want to be like Lady Gaga, is a stereotype.
Pero mi interés con Velma, no fue por nada de esas cosas; ni la polémica que se generaba alrededor, ni nada por el estilo, sería absurdo. Mi interés surgió por el equipo que estaba detrás de la serie, especialmente por Mindy Kalling. Soy fan de ‘The Office’, también disfruté ‘The Mindy Project’, me gusta el tipo de comedia absurda que se maneja aquí. También soy fan de Scooby Doo de toda la vida, y puedo decir, que esta nueva versión me pareció intrigante.
Bien, hablemos un poco del tipo de comedia que se maneja en la serie. Hoy en día, hacer humor negro, está considerado ‘mal visto’, ya que vivimos en la llamada ‘generación de cristal’, donde hay que tener cuidado con lo que dices, pues puedes ofender a otros. Se debe ser inteligente hoy en día si quieres dedicarte a la comedia. Una serie como ‘The Office’, por ejemplo, no hubiera sido bien aceptada en esta época en que vivimos, y estoy seguro de que también hubiera sido blanco de críticas duras de un público progresista.
El humor negro, siempre se ha caracterizado por burlarse de los estereotipos; cosas que la mayoría de la gente piensa, pero no se atreve a decirlo en público. Un estereotipo es una imagen que se tiene sobre un grupo de personas que comparten los mismos gustos y aficiones, lo que los lleva a tener cierto comportamiento ante la sociedad; por ejemplo, decir que todos los gays escuchamos y queremos ser como Lady Gaga, eso es un estereotipo.
This kind of thing, particularly to me as an LGTBQ person, does not offend me, rather it makes me laugh, but there are people with fragile minds, who may see it as an insult. This is what is happening with 'Velma', and the strong criticism it has received. It doesn't seem to me that you should criticize a play superficially, you have to get into it.
To understand this type of comedy, first, you have to study the context; otherwise, it will seem extremely boring. Second, you must be attentive to details, although American black humor is very rough and abrupt, it has small visual references in the setting that help to reinforce the joke and make it funnier.
In 'Velma', these types of elements appear, and although I also agree that there are jokes that don't make you laugh; since they appear in a very forced way, I feel that there are others that worked. The fact that they turned the series into a comic slasher was interesting to me.
Este tipo de cosas, particularmente a mí como persona LGTBQ, no me ofenden, más bien me dan risa, pero hay personas con mentes frágiles, que pueden verlo como un insulto. Esto es lo que pasa con ‘Velma’, y las fuertes críticas que ha recibido. A mí no me parece que se deba criticar una obra de manera superficial, hay que meterse de lleno en ello.
Para entender este tipo de comedia, primero, hay que estudiar el contexto; pues si no, te parecerá extremadamente aburrida. Segundo, debes estar atento a los detalles, aunque el humor negro americano, es muy tosco y abrupto, tiene pequeñas referencias visuales en la ambientación que ayudan a reforzar el chiste y hacerlo más gracioso.
En ‘Velma’, aparecen este tipo de elementos, y aunque también estoy de acuerdo de que hay chistes que no te causan gracia; puesto que aparecen de manera muy forzada, siento que hay otros que si funcionaron. El hecho de que convirtieran la serie en un slasher cómico me pareció interesante.
The vocal performances were quite ironic, the ones I found the funniest were Mindy as Velma, Sam Richardson as Shaggy, and Glenn Howerton, as Fred. I think the script should have been better prepared, but for context, I thought it was fine. I was looking forward to Scooby's appearance, but you have to remember that this all takes place long before the gang got together to go around the world solving mysteries (at least in this story universe).
The characters that amused me the most, and I think they were the ones that caused the most controversy, were Shaggy (Norville) and Fred. Shaggy for turning him into an African-American person, and Fred for portraying that image of the spoiled white rich kid who can't even chop his food. The leader of the legendary group was completely ridiculed, this didn't entirely please me either, as it was a very abrupt change from extreme to the extreme; much bigger than Velma's.
Daphne's character seemed to me the most 'quiet', although with certain jocular characteristics; such as the change in her sexual orientation (also Velma's). I must say, the series did entertain me, with several details that stand out quite a bit. Even though it's only two episodes in (and I have no idea if they will release the remaining ones, at least for this part of the world), I will continue watching it and it may have a twist that surprises me.
Las interpretaciones vocales fueron bastante irónicas, las que más me parecieron graciosas fueron las de Mindy como Velma, Sam Richardson como Shaggy y Glenn Howerton, como Fred. Pienso que el guion debió estar mejor preparado, pero para el contexto me parece que está bien. Estaba esperando la aparición de Scooby, pero hay que recordar que todo esto ocurre mucho antes de que la pandilla se reuniera para recorrer el mundo resolviendo misterios (al menos en este universo de la historia).
Los personajes que más me divirtieron, y creo que fueron los que causaron más polémica, fueron el de Shaggy (Norville) y el de Fred. A Shaggy por convertirlo en una persona afroamericana, y a Fred por representar esa imagen de niño rico blanco y mimado que no puede ni picar su propia comida. El líder del legendario grupo fue ridiculizado por completo, esto tampoco me agradó del todo, ya que fue un cambio muy abrupto de extremo a extremo; mucho más grande que el de Velma.
El personaje de Daphne me pareció el más ‘tranquilo’, aunque con ciertas características jocosas; como el cambio en su orientación sexual (también el de Velma). Debo decir, que la serie si me entretuvo, con varios pormenores que resaltan bastante. Sin bien, solo van dos capítulos (y no tengo idea si sacarán los restantes, al menos para esta parte del mundo), voy a seguir viéndola y puede que tenga un giro que me sorprenda.
