The founders hold a lot of splinterlands assets and are active in mavs chat on discord. If you look at my post @unitmaster/what-is-splinterforge I did an interview with them and posted some information from them.

It certainly could be risky like any other investment like you said. However, the owners/founders aren't hiding or waiting to "step forward" and can easily be contacted on SPL discord (rareraptor and rarelyhere).
