Why The Batman (2022) Stands Out as Gotham’s Most Grounded Noir Detective Story
It's hard to imagine that viewers won't eventually get tired of any franchise that has rebooted itself three times in twenty years. Gotham City has already been depicted in both comic-book styles and incredibly realistic approaches. When Matt Reeves took up the project of The Batman, many fans wondered if there was more to the Caped Crusader story.
As the film progresses towards its running time of almost three hours, it becomes clear that this is not just another Batman action movie. It is actually a slow-paced neo-noir movie about a detective, which is finally able to recall the initial title of the comic: The Greatest Detective on Earth.

The Plot and Setting: Rain, Corruption, and Shadow
Taking place two years into Bruce Wayne's mission as the caped crusader, Gotham City does not have a great impending doom to contend with. Instead, a masked figure calling himself the Riddler is on the hunt for the powerful people of the city. The Riddler then sends puzzling riddles to Batman.
While following clues with Gordon, Batman discovers a long history of corruption involving the powers of Gotham, the mafia bosses and even Bruce Wayne himself.
What Makes the Film Work
Robert Pattinson’s Unhinged Take on Bruce Wayne: Unlike the suave and debonair ladies’ man that we are accustomed to seeing, Pattinson portrays a solitary figure of Bruce who is tormented by revenge. He is clumsy, beaten and emotionally cold. He spends most of his time in a costume that he has to wear as his secret identity has taken over his human form completely.
Masterful Shadow and Sound Design: The cinematographer, Greig Fraser, makes extensive use of shadowy images, water-drenched stones and bold red and orange tones in the visuals. With all this, Michael Giacchino's forceful four-note music theme completes the success of the fearful atmosphere in the scenes related to walking in the dark.
Street-Level Villains: Colin Farrell is unrecognizable under heavy prosthetics as The Penguin, giving a grounded mobster performance. Paul Dano plays the Riddler not as a quirky comic character, but as an unsettling, internet-radicalized killer operating out of a dimly lit apartment.

Where the Pace Slows Down
Extended Third Act Duration: While the mystery setup in the first two hours flows tightly, the narrative shifts gears in the final 40 minutes into a massive stadium flooding disaster. The sudden change from quiet crime-scene investigation to large-scale action feels slightly disconnected from the rest of the film.
Subplot Overcrowding: Managing the Riddler's murder trail, Selina Kyle’s revenge story, Carmine Falcone’s mob empire, and Bruce’s internal family revelations forces the screenplay to squeeze a lot into one sitting.
Personal Verdict
The Batman works due to its ability to remove the glitzy armor and concentrate more on the psychological damage of obsession. The film depicts Gotham City as a real and alive character that is slowly decaying. This makes the story closer in tone and style to Se7en or Zodiac than to ordinary comic book adaptations.
