CAC DAILY DEVOTIONAL GUIDE 馃摎
(THE LIVING WATER)
DATE: Thursday, 1st March, 2018.
TOPIC: BEWARE: COVETOUSNESS IS IDOLATRY
馃摉 READ: Kings 5:20-27
MEMORISE:
And He said to them, "Take heed and beware of covetousness, for one's life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses. (Luke 12:15)
EXPOSITION:
Covetousness is idolatry and the mother of corruption, and it has sent many nations and organisations into bankruptcy. Most disheartening is the rate of covetousness among brethren, today, portraying life, greatness and success as the abundance of things a man possesses. Remember, there is success, and there is good success. The type of success God wants for His own people is good success (Jos. 1:8).
Covetousness is inordinate desire for the possession of something, especially for wealth. Some people covet public fund, church fund, family fund, public properties, the poor's properties, church properties and family properties. Still, some others covet power, position and others' spouses.
What do you covet? What do you desire getting at all cost, regardless of what God or others are saying about it, and regardless of whosoever is hurt by you, getting it? Covetousness has dethroned many kings, destroyed many stars, murdered the opportunities of many people, and truncated many destinies. Remember, you cannot covet worldly things and still carry God's glory (Matt. 6:24).
One sin leads to the other. When you covet, you will try to cover what you have coveted with lies. It might be in Gehazi's way of hiding the 'loot', or in King David's way of killing the vulnerable man to cover the sin (2 Sam. 11:12-26). The covetous can also adopt the lies of King Saul to cover up his tracks. In all, no sinner goes unpunished, the covetous, inclusive (Prov. 16:5).
Covetousness killed King Saul. It finished the prophet-to-be Gehazi. It can kill anybody. Avoid it like plague, like the worst of diseases. Put it to death in your life (Col. 3:5). Do not let it reign in you. Be converted, and be contented with God's provision. (Phil. 4:12-13; 1 Tim. 6:6-7; Heb. 13:5). Desire only what God has for you. Detest everything He has not programmed for you. And how do you know these? By being regularly immersed in His Word and holiness (Rom. 12:1,2).
PRAYER POINTS:
Let the power of covetousness die in me, in Jesus' name.
Father, forgive us of our covetous and evil tendencies, and revive the economy of our country which covetousness is fast killing.
Every inordinate desire in our youths, causing them to go into acts of ungodliness to become wealthy in life, making our society more dangerous by the day, catch fire, in Jesus' name.
