TV Series Review: Merlí (2015) Philosophy in high school and in life!

Serie de televisión española transmitida entre septiembre de 2015 y enero de 2018, 3 temporadas de 13, 13 y 14 capítulos respectivamente, actualmente disponible en el catálogo de Netflix.

¿Cómo empezar?

Transcurría el año 2020, emergencia sanitaria, mucho tiempo en casa, lamentándome de pasar tantas horas mirando al techo, preocupación sin ocupación, el tiempo perdido que no se recupera, quiero decir, lo que estaba pasando en el mundo me hacía pensar en lo frágil de ser mortal, un día estamos y el otro no, el destino seguirá su curso y como dice el dicho “el muerto al hoyo y el vivo al rollo”.

Conecté con una parte de mí que había guardado, el consumidor de cine y series televisión, ¿Por qué lo guardé? Pues… en un momento de mi vida me hice fanático del cine de culto y juegos mentales, esta afición me jugó una mala pasada, me produjo una crisis existencial y de identidad, con terapia pude superar el obstáculo y luego, en una sincera autoevaluación, abracé hábitos para prolongar en bienestar de mi mente.

No quiero de decir que el cine hace daño, fue mi caso, mi mente, la forma en que percibí las historias y las dejé afectar mi vida.

Ahora, vuelvo al punto…

Ese año tan difícil, yo quería sentirme optimista, creativo, soñador, quería ver una historia como “Física o Química”, Juventud al límite, amores intensos, sentimientos a flor de piel, aventuras y travesuras, rebeldía, impulsos típicos de la adolescencia y más, hice mis búsquedas en algunos foros de recomendaciones y llegué al tráiler de “Merlí”, de momento elegí otra serie, pero después una amiga me dijo “tienes que ver Merlí” y en ese momento le hice caso.

How to start?

The year 2020 was passing, health emergency, a lot of time at home, regretting spending so many hours looking at the ceiling, worry without occupation, lost time that is not recovered, I mean, what was happening in the world made me think about how fragile it is to be mortal, one day we are and the other not, fate will take its course and as the saying goes "the dead to the hole and the living to the roll".

I connected with a part of me that I had kept, the consumer of movies and TV series, why did I keep it? Well... at one point in my life I became a fan of cult movies and mind games, this hobby played a dirty trick on me, it produced an existential and identity crisis, with therapy I was able to overcome the obstacle and then, in a sincere self-evaluation, I embraced habits to prolong the well-being of my mind.

I don't want to say that movies hurt, it was my case, my mind, the way I perceived the stories and let them affect my life.

Now, back to the point...

That difficult year, I wanted to feel optimistic, creative, dreamer, I wanted to see a story like "Física o Química", Youth to the limit, intense love, feelings to the surface, adventures and mischief, rebellion, typical impulses of adolescence and more, I did my searches in some forums of recommendations and I came to the trailer of "Merlí", at the moment I chose another series, but then a friend told me "you have to see Merlí" and at that moment I listened to her.

El Argumento.

Un profesor de filosofía sin empleo, pasa por una serie de eventos complicados, cuando de repente consigue trabajo en un instituto de educación secundaria en Barcelona, España. ¡Sorpresa! Será el profesor de su hijo, con quien tiene una relación difícil, Merlí es de espíritu libre y nada en el mundo lo sorprende, pronto empezarán los impases con el resto de profesores, quienes cuestionarán la metodología de Merlí para dar clases, una verdadera revolución.

Una idea que enmarca la serie, es que todos piensan que Filosofía es una materia complementaria y electiva, casi prescindible, las verdaderamente importantes son lenguaje y matemáticas. Merlí piensa que su especialidad es la más importante para la vida, se saltará los contenidos del programa educativo que considera arcaicos y diseñará su propio programa, en cada clase hablará de las contribuciones de un filósofo en particular, repasando la historia de la filosofía desde la antigua Grecia hasta nuestros tiempos.

En el hilo de la historia cada capítulo es una clase, y la trama se desenvuelve en base a la clase de filosofía, historias de adolescentes, amor, rebeldía, complejos, crisis de identidad, abusos de sustancias, sexo, locuras que te hacen morir de risa y nunca se olvidan. La Juventud en su mayoría se dejará llevar, escuchará con atención y se autodenominarán “Los Peripatéticos”.

Se tocan temas como la identidad, la autoestima, la vocación, el sistema, la sociedad, la felicidad, la vida después de la muerte, el ser humano desde la superficie y el interior.

The Plot.

An unemployed philosophy professor goes through a series of complicated events when he suddenly gets a job in a secondary school in Barcelona, Spain. Surprise! He will be the teacher of his son, with whom he has a difficult relationship, Merlí is a free spirit and nothing in the world surprises him, soon the impasses will begin with the rest of the teachers, who will question Merlí's methodology for teaching, a real revolution.

An idea that frames the series is that everyone thinks that Philosophy is a complementary and elective subject, almost dispensable, the really important ones are language and mathematics. Merlí thinks that his specialty is the most important for life, he will skip the contents of the educational program that he considers archaic and design his own program, in each class he will talk about the contributions of a particular philosopher, reviewing the history of philosophy from ancient Greece to our times.

In the thread of the story each chapter is a class, and the plot unfolds based on the philosophy class, stories of teenagers, love, rebellion, complexes, identity crisis, substance abuse, sex, crazy things that make you die laughing and never forget. The Youth will mostly get carried away, listen attentively and call themselves "The Peripatetics".

They touch on topics such as identity, self-esteem, vocation, the system, society, happiness, life after death, the human being from the surface and the inside.

Es la serie de adolescentes más ligera y a la vez más profunda que vi, el enfoque es más introspectivo, ¿Cómo definirlo? Desde mi opinión, son adolescente enfrentando problemas más reales, ahogándose en vasos de agua, tomando decisiones en momentos de euforia, de las que luego se arrepienten, se enamoran y viven el momento. No hay efectos especiales, asesinatos, herencias de empresas multimillonarias, es más una historia de emociones, decisiones y reflexiones.

Algo que respeto mucho de las historias españolas, es la actuación naturalista, hay momentos en que las secuencias de actuación son tan convincentes, no se basan tanto en la imagen, hay personas de todos los estereotipos que hacen interpretaciones magistrales, viven los personajes, y estos son escritos de forma que parecen protagonistas del momento, quiero decir, los personajes secundarios y las apariciones especiales, tienen historias cuidadas y muy hermosas.

It is the lightest and at the same time the deepest teen series I saw, the approach is more introspective, how to define it? In my opinion, they are teenagers facing more real problems, drowning in glasses of water, making decisions in moments of euphoria, which they later regret, falling in love and living in the moment. There are no special effects, murders, inheritance of multi-million dollar companies, it is more a story of emotions, decisions and reflections.

Something I respect a lot about Spanish stories, is the naturalistic acting, there are moments when the acting sequences are so convincing, they are not based so much on the image, there are people of all stereotypes that make masterful interpretations, they live the characters, and these are written in a way that they seem like protagonists of the moment, I mean, the secondary characters and special appearances, they have careful and very beautiful stories.

Mis personajes favoritos son; Merlí Bergeron, el maestro de ceremonias, cínico, existencialista y vitalista como el que más, equilibrio entre fortalezas y debilidades, Tania Illa, la virgen acomplejada que quiere una primera vez de película, Joan Capdevila, el chico tímido sobresaliente en las calificaciones que buscar armarse de valor para conquistar a la chica que le gusta, Bruno Bergeron, el hijo de Merlí, que tiene una historia LGTB muy aleccionadora, por último, la pequeña historia de Quima, una profesora transexual de la tercera edad que luchará contra los prejuicios y la estructura conservadora.

Esta serie la vi una sola vez, es muy hermosa, pero algunos desenlaces dejaron sensible, por lo que no quiero remover esos sentimientos en una segunda experiencia.

Tiene sus detalles, algunas tramas inconclusas, pero siempre digo que los autores son fieles a sus convicciones, corrientes y estilo, y así estaba escrito que pasaría, aun así, aunque no me hayan dado más de lo que quería, o me hayan cambiado mi final deseado, la califico 10/10, es única en su género.

My favorite characters are: Merlí Bergeron, the master of ceremonies, cynical, existentialist and vitalist as the most, balance between strengths and weaknesses, Tania Illa, the self-conscious virgin who wants a first time movie, Joan Capdevila, the shy boy excelling in grades who seeks to arm himself with courage to conquer the girl he likes, Bruno Bergeron, the son of Merlí, who has a very sobering LGTB story, finally, the little story of Quima, a transsexual senior teacher who will fight against prejudice and conservative structure.

I watched this series only once, it is very beautiful, but some outcomes left sensitive, so I do not want to stir those feelings in a second experience.

It has its details, some unfinished plots, but I always say that the authors are faithful to their convictions, currents and style, and so it was written that it would happen, even so, although they have not given me more than I wanted, or they have changed my desired ending, I rate it 10/10, it is unique in its genre.
