Did you ever believe in the follower count displayed by the steemit.com?
I did not. The reason for that is the enormous number of "spam accounts" that automatically discover your presence on steemit and subscribe to you in order to promote themselves. This greatly inflates the follower count for new minnows since there are many more such bots than there are genuine followers interested in your content (while you are not that famous). At the same time, some people use auto-subscription scripts and subscribe to quite a few steemians. I think that an account with more than a 5000 subscriptions is barely spending any time reading these. Probably even 1000 is too many.
To solve this problem for myself and other steemians I created a bot called SubBot. It is a very simple bot with a single task: to monitor comments under this particular post and reply to these with some information regarding the followers of commenting account. You can check my example comment below to see what information is posted.
