Pakistan suffered a 4-run loss in the 1st Test against New Zealand as Ajaz Patel led the Kiwis bowling attack helping the visitors claim the last six wickets for just 24 runs. Ajaz Patel, who was playing his first Test, took 5 wickets in the second innings and was well supported by Neil Wagner in wrapping up the Pakistani innings. Azhar Ali and Asad Shafiq stitched an 82-run stand for the fourth wicket and took Pakistan in a commanding position, however, things fell apart for the hosts right before the lunch as Wagner dismissed Asad. Azhar Ali, who stood right till the end, was the last Pakistani batsman to be dismissed as New Zealand recorded its narrowest Test victory in terms of runs.
