I don't know if I'm the only one who experiences this or if there are others in the same boat. Whenever I start something new, I begin with a lot of excitement, but then... I fail to see it through to the end.
When a new idea pops into my head, I get really excited about it. I start making plans and imagining how great it will feel once I complete it. Sometimes, I even tell myself that since I’m starting this, I’ll definitely finish it—meaning I’ll stick with it and not give up halfway. But then, after a few days, that excitement just vanishes 😅, and the task gets left unfinished.
There are so many things I’ve started but, for one reason or another, never managed to complete. Honestly, I don't even know why this happens, though I’ve recently started noticing this pattern in myself.
When a new idea comes to mind, I don't just think about starting it; I end up visualizing almost everything beforehand. I start imagining what it will look like when it's finished, what I’ll gain from it, how people will perceive it, and just how wonderful it will feel.
Perhaps this is the very reason I eventually lose interest. My mind gets excited by an idea—thrilled by the possibility of "what if I actually pull this off?"
But then the actual work begins, and that’s where things start to feel a bit difficult.
Suppose an idea pops into my head: "Why not start a YouTube channel?" And just like that...
I dive right in. I start researching and looking for content ideas. I observe how others are making videos, try to pick a niche, and look up the necessary tools. I start planning everything—how the videos will be made, what the content will be, and so on.
For the first day or two, I’m completely immersed in it. But then, the excitement gradually fades, and a new idea starts forming in my mind—"Let's start something else instead." And the whole cycle repeats itself.
When I first joined Hive, I was full of excitement, determined to post every day. But as the days went by, that excitement fizzled out. Now that I’ve noticed this pattern, I’m trying to fix it.
To be honest, I think we become addicted to that initial rush of excitement.
For instance, I love doing something new—thinking about it, planning it, and imagining the results. But when I have to do that same task over and over again, day in and day out, it starts to feel boring. Before I even realize it, my excitement turns into boredom, and the project gets abandoned halfway through—even though real progress actually happens during that "boring" phase.
I feel like my brain is wired to readily accept easy targets. If a task is simple and shows quick progress, I happily complete it.
However, the moment a task demands significant effort, patience, or consistency, my mind starts looking for ways to avoid it:
"I'll do it tomorrow."
"Let me take a quick break."
"Let's try something else instead."
Consequently, a task that could have been finished in a few weeks ends up remaining incomplete for months.
It’s not that I don’t want to do the work; sometimes, I simply want to avoid the uncomfortable aspects of the task.
Having new ideas isn't a bad thing—in fact, I love that my mind is constantly coming up with fresh concepts. But I don't want to end up just collecting ideas without ever seeing anything through to completion. That’s why I’m trying a different approach now.
When a new idea pops into my head, instead of starting it immediately, I jot it down in a notebook. I focus on finishing the current task first—handling any necessary research or writing—before moving on. No matter how long it takes or how boring it becomes, I make sure to complete the task at hand before jumping to the next one.
It’s not that those things don’t happen anymore; there are still times when I’m working on a task, get a new idea, and immediately jump to it. But now, I keep reminding myself that...
A fresh start isn't always necessary. Sometimes, we just need to finish what we’ve already begun. ❤️
Does this happen to you too?
Do you also start things with great excitement but lose interest halfway through?
Or are you one of those people who, once they start something, simply won't stop until it's finished? 😄
I’d love to know—am I the only one, or is there anyone else like me? 😂
