Some players are ahead if they have funds, they can invest on their own cards. A must-have for starters are Furious Chicken, Creeping Ooze, and my first favorite Goblin Mech.
These are just my recommendations and some players may argue with me on this.

The gameplays you may encounter will vary from one match to the other. Since you may use one card on this battle and not on the next. But it is very handy to have the Chicken since it is the only "zero" mana card in the game. You can always add him to almost any battle which could be a difference between winning and losing.
Your ooze simply add-in since it has one mana plus it slows/reduces the enemy speed of all monsters. Goblin mech on the other hand is your front man/tank. It has ample armor and health plus it packs a lot of melee damage. For me, there are great investments if you can buy them.
With my daily quest today, I just pulled these guys!

My first gold foil card from daily quest. It does exist, a gold card in your rewards despite no quest potion. Yeah Boy!
