Biblically, religion is seen not just as a set of rules or traditions, but as a relationship between humans and God. In James 1:27, the Bible defines “pure and undefiled religion before God” as caring for orphans and widows in their distress and keeping oneself from being polluted by the world. This shows that true religion goes beyond ceremonies it is about living righteously, showing compassion, and staying faithful to God's commands. Religion in the Bible is more of a lifestyle that reflects God's love and holiness.

Throughout the Bible, especially in the Old Testament, religion was expressed through obedience to God’s law, worship in the temple, and living in covenant with Him. The Israelites were called to be set apart, showing their devotion to God through sacrifices, prayers, and festivals. But even then, God constantly reminded them that He desires mercy and a sincere heart more than burnt offerings (Hosea 6:6). This shows that religious acts without genuine faith and love for God are empty.

In the New Testament, Jesus emphasized the heart of religion loving God with all your heart, soul, and mind, and loving your neighbor as yourself (Matthew 22:37-39). He challenged the religious leaders of His time for being more focused on outward appearances than inward faith. Therefore, biblically speaking, religion is not about impressing others or following traditions blindly. It is about a deep, personal connection with God that transforms how we treat others and live our daily lives.
