Tomb Raider (2018)

Well, let's make this quick, and I won't lie to you, I liked the movie. Yes, I'm also surprised that I liked this film and that it's well made. And this is totally due to Alicia Vikander's performance, I really think that without her the film would have become just one of many and she carries most of the film with her. Alicia Vikander as Lara, is magnificent, and I definitely wouldn't have liked Tomb Raider if she hadn't been there, who knows what would have happened if she hadn't been there. Of course, the film does have its flaws, after all, it's not perfect, and that's what I'm talking about in this opinion. Well, this film from the very beginning, it started out quite well for me, and I don't know if it was the impression that I didn't expect anything from this film; or that the first third of the film was really a wonder, and this is due to two things. One is Alicia, of course, and the other is that the director tells us his story of origin, and that's very clever. They show their daily lives so that when Lara is in a dangerous and risky situation on the island, we can see her transformation into an adventurer and her impact will be greater.

Now, let's talk more deeply about Alicia. I mean, she has an Oscar, she definitely knows how to act, and above all, she convinces us that she really knows what she's doing. If there are times when you show that you have skills, that you have training. But all these are loaded with humanization in the character of Lara. Alicia's super skinny, baby, she looks like a stick.... And she's great. Combined with this humanization, it is tremendously good to see how Lara is not a ninja, she also fails, she also loses; and failures do damage her. And those moments when they show that there's an even cooler woman he can become, it's amazing. Alice really makes every action sequence she has, you want to support her and you want her to be victorious.

And speaking of the action scenes, I must say, yes, it's really good. I was very surprised by the scenes, I mean, I just expected boredom in this film, but every time a scene happened I was quite tense and very satisfied. Personally, I loved sequences like the one on the bicycle or the one on the plane. And, I love how they balance these scenes with another one where Lara shows how intelligent she is, solving mysteries and puzzles. Every scene that happened was really different from the other, and every moment that happened was like video game levels perfectly adapted to the cinema. The film, which was not at all monotonous, has the same number of facets as its main actress.

Alicia Vikander in Tomb Raider (2018)

And, I really want to make it clear that Alicia Vikander carries this film, without it, the film would easily have been one more of a kind, and it would have been the same as the versions they brought us earlier. The film is not the best in the world, and it has a very bad history writing. But it has the advantage that we are focusing on his main character who is doing a great job, so I end up surprised. Something great about the film is that important moments, such as deaths, explosions, murders and the like, were taken very seriously, for example the relationship with his father, or with the Asian who already forgot the name, which, although as an individual character did not have much to give, the relationship with Lara was very interesting. With the flashbacks to his father, we saw how they treated each other, and those were really nice moments. Well, I must make it clear that I, personally, haven't played much Tomb Raider, just a little bit in 2015, and because I heard that this was going to be the basis for the film. But, I don't think I needed scenes with Lara's dad, either in a video or in a flashback, for him to explain the other half of the movie and the adventure that Lara is getting into, and that was too boring.

Lara's character is too interesting, her transformation into the adventurous one and the physical and internal problems she faces to become one were the best part of this film. But now, when we talk about the adventure itself, the story that is being given to her, where she is being "threaded", it was really very boring. Let's take Walton Goggins as an example, his character is fine in the film, but now his whole malevolent plan, you don't know how bored I was. And it's sad, because I know how important Himiko's story is in the game, and I think it's great, I think it's interesting, but in the movie it's totally wasted and now it's totally the worst thing about the movie. Now, as a small detail, there's the East Asian character, which I think is a cliché and an advantage for the directors. I mean, the two of them don't like each other at first, and there's a two-minute set-up to make them best friends forever. Admit it, this is misspelled, and I could put a lot of example things that just feel like script convenience, but it would be spoiler, so, it stays that way. Tomb Raider is very entertaining, very lively, very cool, among others. But I want to emphasize for the hundredth time that if I didn't have an incredible lead character played by an amazing actress, the film would be totally lost. Actually, apart from the sequences, the things that are saved from this film are the emotional side that it brings with it, they tell you the story of a woman with problems at the death of her father. And it's ironic that that part is much more interesting to me than the grave-robbing part, yes, as they said they were really good, but only because of how Lara was suffering for them.
