Hello FeatheredFriends! It's been some time since I last submitted a photo to the Show Me A Photo contest, but for this week's edition, I would like to share a few photos of tufted titmouses (Baeolophus bicolor) that I have taken over the last couple of months.
While I would prefer to be out hiking through the woods in search of feathered friends to photograph, the bitter cold over the last several months has forced me to stay indoors. Thankfully, I have a small balcony attached to my apartment where I have been able to place a few bird feeders and a birdhouse. After only a few days of waiting for the local flocks to find my offering, I have had a steady stream of feathered visitors coming to my window each and every day.
In the last several months, I have been visited by a variety of different bird species, ranging from house finches, to cardinals, to a pair of blue jays that have taken up the habit of loudly cawing from the railing of my balcony if I do not refill their bowl of peanuts early enough in the morning for them. So much for sleeping in on the weekends.
Of all of the different bird species that come to my window, one of my favorites are always the tufted titmouses. I often catch these small curious birds peering through the window into my apartment as I round a corner into view. More often that not, they are very shy, and quickly fly away at the sight of me, but on occasion, they stay in place, apparently curious as to who or what I may be. Unlike the frantic mannerisms of the many house sparrows that frequent my balcony, the titmouses hop and wander around my balcony with a curiosity that I can't help but admire. My submission for this weeks edition of the SMAP contest captures one of these visitors mid-hop as he explores my balcony. I hope that you enjoy!
