Though I haven't had as much time recently to get out into the woods, I still wanted to join this week's edition of Wednesday walk using a few pictures taken earlier this spring just as the warm weather had arrived to my corner of the world.
Though many of the trees still appeared barren at this time of the year, a closer inspection showed the first blooms beginning to emerge from their winter slumber. Also waking from a deep sleep were the various amphibians and turtles that inhabit the many inland lands that dot my region. From the endangered, brumating Blanding's turtles to the frozen wood frogs, waiting out the harsh cold of winter is a game of quiet patience. Though, once spring has sprung, the same ponds that were silent only weeks before burst to life with huddles of turtles and snakes basking on debris out on the water while a chorus of frogs and toads cry out from the water's edge. Further from the water, the first flowers of the year: skunk cabbage, trout lilies, and bloodroot, display their inflorescence in a bid to attract the early pollinators.
The woods are beautiful at this time of the year, hinting at the vibrancy yet to come in the summer. Here is to another year of hiking through this beautiful landscape. Thank you for walking with me.
