These photos show an orchard orbweaver (Leucauge venusta) that I came across earlier this summer basking in a ray of sunshine that peaked through the dense forest canopy above. This beautiful species is among the most colorful that one can hope to come across in the understory of the forests of eastern North America. With bright green-yellow legs and an abdomen adorned with dark bands and varying shades of reds, oranges, yellows, silvers, and even blues, each individual is a uniquely colored masterpiece of evolution.
The range of this species extends from southern Ontario, Canada across the eastern half of the continental United States, and as far South as Central America and into Columbia. The webs woven by this species are typically oriented horizontally or at an angle to the forest floor with its creator situated at its center, waiting for its unsuspecting prey to fly into its trap.
I chose this first image to submit for this week's challenge since I find they way that creates a halo effect around this delicate spider's body to be particularly beautiful. I hope that you agree!
Thank you again to @bucipuci and the Amazing Nature community team for organizing these competitions! I always enjoy going through the submissions!
