You just have to learn to flow with traffic in order to cross the street. If you move slowly without making sudden movements and make eye-contact with cars, they will usually predict whether to go in front of or behind you and you move through traffic with no issues. I heard that instructions for how to cross the streets in Vietnam are actually in some tourist brochures :)
