The first time I moved to Los Angeles was in the New Year Prince sang about; 1999. I was told to "Never go downtown," and I never did; aside from changing busses. My impression from those brief glimpses was of a post-apocalyptic hellhole full of unimaginable suffering.
I don't have many photos; but this painting, "The Sad Procession" was inspired by the suffering I witnessed.

The second time I moved to LA I lived downtown, literally, due to the "Occupy" protests. What started as a beautiful movement of committed individuals slowly devolved into a dangerous party zone full of criminals and people with suspicious motivations. I got to know the city a bit more, and learned to appreciate both the good and the bad.
The third time I moved to Los Angeles, I became a resident artist at the "Hive Gallery and Studios" on Gallery Row. A fun gallery full of interesting characters and truly inspiring artwork. I showed there for two years before deciding I could no longer make the commute.
If you love art, a trip to DTLA is essential; between the galleries, outdoor light shows, museums and fabulous street art; the scene here is vibrant and ever changing.
Downtown Los Angeles is full of fascinating bars, restaurants, galleries and shops.
Two of my favorites are "The Last Bookstore" and Clifton's Republic; each a short walk from each other and the Hive Gallery if you want to make a day of it. Both are full of fascination art and sculpture; and can transport you to a different world.
At "The Last Bookstore" you can stroll the stacks at the end of time.
Each Floor of "Clifton's Republic" has a different atmosphere. The first floor is a cafeteria in a woodland, the second boasts a giant tree in the center and a plethora of Taxidermy, the top floor holds a Tiki bar, small villa and a bar in a boat.
Sorry if these images are dark.
The various cultural enclaves around downtown are also worth a visit.
One of my favorite places to visit is the Arts District; full of great food, shopping, galleries and immersive experiences. It is one of those areas you might not know to visit unless someone in the know tells you to.
I haven't been as much of an activist since I moved back here; but the few protests I have joined or witnessed downtown have been; interesting; to say the least.
Well there is my trip for now; hope you enjoyed the ride.
