Hello Hives,
One thing I have come to understand as I grow older is that the people around us can influence us more than we sometimes realize. There is a popular saying, “You are the company you keep.” Honestly, the more I think about it, the more sense it really makes to me.
Nobody wakes up one morning and suddenly becomes a completely different person. Most times, it happens through gradual process. You spend time with certain people, listen to their conversations, observe their lifestyle, and before you know it, some of their habits and ways of thinking start rubbing off on you.
I have seen situations where someone was once very focused and disciplined, but after getting involved with the wrong group of friends, things started changing. Their priorities changed, their behaviour changed, and even the way they talked became different. Sometimes, the person may not even notice the change until someone close to them talk about it.
The same thing can happen in a positive way.
When you surround yourself with people who are hardworking, honest, respectful and determined to make something meaningful out of their lives, you can also become motivated. Sometimes, you don't even need anyone to lecture you. Just watching someone close to you work hard can make you ask yourself, “What am I doing with my own life?”
That is why I believe friendship is something we should take seriously.
For me, it is not about looking down on people because they are struggling or have made mistakes. We all have our weaknesses, and nobody is perfect. But there is a difference between helping someone who is trying to improve and allowing someone else's bad habits to become your own.
Another thing we should remember is that people don't always separate us from the people we associate with. If you constantly move with people known for certain behaviour, some people may naturally assume that you are part of it too because I have been there before.
And honestly, that can affect your reputation.
I have learned that I don't need to have many friends. I would rather have a few people around me who truly want to see me grow, people I can trust, learn from and share meaningful moments with.
There is a line from the picture that really caught my attention: “A mirror reflects your physical appearance, but the company you keep reflects who you really are.”
That line says a lot.
So, before you become too comfortable with any circle, take a moment and ask yourself: “What kind of person am I becoming because of the people around me?”
Sometimes, choosing your friends carefully is one of the quietest ways of protecting your future.
