Today I'm bringing you a summary and analysis of one of those dark tales by the Brothers Grimm that I love so much 🤗 they're my guilty pleasure hehe 😄 I hope you like "The Juniper Tree" >Para ele día de hoy traigo el resumen y análisis de uno de esos cuentos sombríos de los hermanos Grim que tanto me gustan 🤗 son mi gusto culposo jeje 😄 espero que les guste "El Enebro"

Overview/Resumen

A loving couple were happy but childless, despite the wife's constant prayers. One winter, while peeling an apple under a juniper tree, she pricked her finger. Seeing the blood fall on the snow, she wished she could have a child with those characteristics—white as snow and red as blood. She gave birth to a beautiful son, but died in childbirth and was buried under that same juniper tree. The father remarried, this time to a wicked woman. They had a daughter, but this woman detested their firstborn son.

>Una pareja de esposos que se amaban eran felices pero no tenían hijos, a pesar de que la mujer le pedía a Dios día y noche. En una ocasión durante el invierno en que pelaba una manzana bajo un árbol de enebro, ella se pinchó el dedo y cuando vio la sangre caer sobre la nieve pensó que le gustaría tener un hijo con esas características (blanco como la nieve y rojo como la sangre), y en efecto ella da a un luz un hijo hermoso pero ella muere en el parto y es enterrada bajo ese mismo enebro. One day, when the boy returned from school, the demon inspired the woman to do something horrible to him. First, she treated him with feigned sweetness and offered him an apple from a chest, but warned him that he must take it himself. The boy obeyed, and as he bent down to reach into the chest, the woman slammed the heavy lid shut, decapitating the child. Seeing this, the woman sat the body on a chair, placed the head back on its head, and tied it with a cloth like a scarf.

>En una ocasión en que el niño regresó de la escuela el demonio inspiró a la mujer a hacer algo horrible con él, primero lo trató con falsa dulzura y le ofreció una manzana de las que estaban en un arcón, pero le advirtió que debía tomarlas él mismo, el niño obedeció y cuando se inclinó hacia el interior del arcón, la mujer cerró la pesada tapa, decapitando al pequeño. Marleenken, the boy's sister, asked him for the apple, but obviously the boy didn't react, so she shook him and his head fell off. Then his mother, to try to hide her daughter's "mistake," cut the boy into pieces and threw him into the stew. But the worst part was that she gave it to her own father to eat. He, of course, asked about his son, but she told him that the boy had gone to the house of some relatives.

>Marleenken, la hermana del niño, le pidió la manzana pero obviamente el niño no reaccionaba, así que ella lo agitó y de esta manera la cabeza se le cayó, entonces su madre, para tratar de ocultar "el error" de su hija cortó al niño en pedazos y lo echó al guiso, pero lo peor de todo fue que se lo dio de comer a su propio padre, él por supuesto preguntó por su hijo pero ella le contestó que el niño se había marchado a la casa de unos parientes.

The father ate that stew with gusto; he even told the woman that it was delicious and that he wanted more, that it gave him the feeling of eating something of his own; he ate and threw the bones under the table

The sister then gathers the bones, puts them inside a handkerchief, and buries them under the juniper tree, the same juniper tree where the boy's mother is buried. Suddenly, a bird emerged and began to sing a story about a crime...

First he went to a goldsmith's house, and after singing his song, the goldsmith gave him a gold chain. And so he obtained favors through his macabre song: My mother killed me, my father ate me, and my good little sister gathered my bones, kept them in a very pretty silk cloth, and buried them at the foot of the juniper tree. What a pretty little bird I am!

The fact is that the bird returns to the house, kills the stepmother, frees the child, that is, resurrects him, and the child can go back to live with his father and sister.

>El caso es que el pájaro regresa hasta la casa, mata a la madrastra, libera al niño, es decir, lo resucita y el niño puede volver a vivir con su padre y con su hermana.

My Opinion/Mi Opinión

There is no doubt that this is one of the most macabre tales in the Grimm Brothers' repertoire, with nothing less than infanticide as its central theme or axis. There is also the envy that the stepmother feels towards the child, and what strikes me most is that the apple is, in this case, the motive, or rather the means, through which the crime is committed—an apple again, just like in Snow White, remember?

He revives through the bird that sings the song and then with his original body, but whatever the case, this makes us think that the tree acts as something like a channel, or as a bridge that unites life and death; that is where the child's mother is buried and that is where the child reemerges as a bird, tormenting the mother with that song and also proclaiming the crime of which he was a victim.

I think it's one of the most macabre stories, not only because of the explicitness of the death and the macabre fact that the stepmother fed the father his son's flesh, but because the very act of evil or crime breaks with family harmony, the harmony that is supposed to exist in a family.

>Creo que es una de las historias más macabras, no solamente por lo explícito de la muerte y por lo macabro del hecho de que la madrastra le diera de comer al padre la carne de su hijo, sino porque porque el hecho en sí de la maldad o el crimen rompe con la armonía familiar, la armonía que se supone debe existir en una familia.

Another striking thing is that at first the stepmother seems overwhelmed by the crime she committed, but far from accepting her own guilt, she hides it in a horrible way, leaving her daughter to assume that responsibility, thinking that she had killed the child when she shook him very hard and his head fell off. Then the girl in this case did not act cruelly but rather she had compassion for him, picked up his bones and went to bury him in the juniper tree.

And I bring up the apple again because this fruit is always associated with sin. For example, even though the Bible doesn't mention it as an apple, people assume it's the fruit Adam and Eve ate. The apple also appears as a temptation in Snow White, and in this case, it also tempted the child. The story also seems to speak to us about deadly sins. For instance, we have the stepmother's envy. It seems she wasn't satisfied with the love her husband felt for her, but rather didn't want the child because she didn't see him as part of her own family. Perhaps she thought her husband loved him more than her, his wife, or their daughter, so she envied the child. On the other hand, we also have gluttony. The husband was so absorbed in the food he was eating that he didn't even care that his son had disappeared under mysterious circumstances.

>Y vuelvo a mencionar el tema de la manzana porque siempre se atribuye esta fruta al pecado, por ejemplo a pesar de que la Biblia no menciona que fuese una manzana, la gente asume que es el fruto del que comieron a Adán y Eva, también está la manzana como tentación en Blancanieves y en este caso también sirvió de tentación al niño.
