Muthuvel Karunanidhi (3 June 1924 – 7 August 2018), gifted writer and monumental politician from India's Tamil Nadu, has passed away this August.
What could have been the secret behind the longevity of his popularity? Perhaps one of his interviews recorded in October, 2007, will shed light on the real magic, the power behind his capacity to rule in the hearts of his people, for decades after another.
His conscience, according to him, was his only god. And that's... very interesting, a sweet music at least to my ears.
In a country torn and fragmented, very heavily beyond belief, on religious lines, on communal lines, the caste stratification, etc., he stood out from the crowd, to be seen as being conscientious. He transcended those lines, which kept people divided, and attended to the heartbeats of different communities. To the Muslims here, to the Christians there, to the Hindus, to the atheists and secularists... he went to them if invited, as opposed to throwing rocks from one camp against another. He amalgamated in him the virtues, of the conscientious from all groups – at least in some sense. And that, my friend, is the secret, the magical force behind what kept his throne intact against all odds, again and again, throughout his life that beamed – at least to his beloved people – as a beacon of light. His departure had left a void in the hearts of many, as judged by the size of the crowd in the streets. Pictures, truly indeed, tell a thousand words.
