Sodium-ion batteries are a promising technology that is being refined at PNNL and elsewhere. The key to a sustainable future is energy storage that comes from renewable sources, is reliable and reliant. Another great aspect of a sodium-ion batteries is their resistance to temperature and their overall stability. A cheap, safe and quality battery that can power electric vehicles is a godsend for the industry.
Sodium-ion batteries are a piece in the puzzle for widespread battery-powered vehicle adoption. Lithium-ion batteries currently used in electric vehicles are dependent on continued procurement of rare-earth metals and the use of lead-acid batteries produces a large quantity of hazardous waste. The recent development in the sodium-ion battery will enable green-energy storage, electric vehicle enablement and is wonderful for the environment.
